Unfortunately, you would seem to be right. It has been very quiet. Also, unfortunately, my NYC knowledge is rather limited to my local area where the CCC&StL was born. Their double-track main still hums with traffic as it passes my house. :)
How about a photo of South Anderson Yard circa 1955 with a NYC L4A Mohawk. The Photo was by M.D.McCarter and is from the Ron Buser Collection. Used with permission.

Yeah, I agree, let's get something going here. Of course all of you NYC fans realize that today, Dec. 7, is the 59th anniversary of inauguration of the Empire State Express. Unfortunately it was slightly overshadowed by another historic event that took place that day at Pearl Harbor.
I am linking to a photo of 5426, one of the J-3s streamlined for the ESE. This photo is courtesy of George Elwood's great NYC collection.

OOOPS! Bad link. I'll try again with the correct one. Again, credit to George Elwood's collection. Looks like late in her career with standard PT tender, no matching streamlining.

Alan, et al, I didn't even notice until the photo came up that she is taking water on the fly from track pans--a common event on the NYC in the glory days. Gone now. http://www.trainboard.com/frown.gif

Taking water on the fly was a great way to keep a fast schedule as long as the scoop came up.
I understand that the first troughs were built with square ends...
They were changed a short time later to sloped ends. The scoop ended up in the third car back which happened to be a baggage or mail storage car.
Urban legend or the truth?

Water troughs were very common on most main lines here in the UK. You just did not want to be standing too close to one, as locomotives picked up water http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

It sure would be neat to step back in history and wouldn't we make an effort to get more pictures like these great steam locos.

Well, how about some of the operations there. Perhaps the locos or the various loads to local industry, etc.
