While passing through Ft Worth a few weeks ago I saw four ex NYC ,ex Metro fluted passenger cars sitting in the Fort Worth Western yards under the freeway overpass.
Anyone know where they came from or why they are there?
I was passing a truck while crossing the bridge and out of the corner of my eye I saw these cars sitting there and HAD to take a look and pictures. They have been there a very long time and are in sad shape. They need to be rescued!!!

Ron, welcome home again. I asked Stuart if he could help out--he lives in Fort Worth and has seen these cars.

Ron,
I have seen the same cars you're talking about while passing through the yard riding on the Tarantula. Fitz and I determined these are likely ex-Metro Commuter North coaches (but also ex-NYC of course). To be completely honest with you, I found it a bit odd that a piece of NYC history was down here in Texas, but it is possible that the FW&W purchased them. They have gotten a lot of the equipment they run on the Tarantula from other parts of the country. For example, the coaches they use came from Strasburg.
But let's not leave this to just speculation. The 2248 that runs on the Tarantula should be finished with her repairs in another month or two, and I will ask one of the hired hands next time I go.

Yes Metro North is on the cars and NYC letter boards are showing their heritage.
The cars are really rough but with a little tlc and $$$$$ they could be rolling again.
Hopefully with New York Central on the letter boards.

I just received my photos(2nd roll from Ft Worth) and this is stenciled on the end of one of the cars "MNCR COT&S 6-13-90".MNCR- Metro North Commuter Railroad I can figure but what "COT&S" is I don't compute.

Ron, I just saw this somewhere else, and though I can't remember the exact meaning, it's something like "Cleaned, Oiled, Tested and s____. It's a periodic maintenance thing that the RR's tagged on their cars.

That was most likely done prior to the cars being sent to Ft Worth ...for what ever reason.

Sorry, guys, work just got too hectic for me the last several weeks. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to ask anyone who would know what the cars were doing there, but I do have some decent shots of them. Here's one.....

There are three others on my website, they can be seen at:

Sorry I didn't find out more.........I had an excited 4 year old son to deal with on this trip. I feel like I let you guys down. :(

Stuart, don't be sorry. No-one is more confused than your moderator. I just got home from a week on the road and missed Ron's message, Yours and a few others. I'M the one who should be sorry. Plus as you know I am a little crazy with the quit smoking thing. Still hangin in.

Yeah, Pat, some people just have to mark their territory like cats I guess. While on our latest trip I saw a whole string of old Pacific Fruit Express reefers on a siding that had been tagged big time. Actually some of it is pretty "artsy" but still vandalism.
