Hi,
I am new on this board. I am looking for pictures of the Anderson, Indiana NYC roundhouse in the 50's. Anyone know where I might find such a picture?

When you combine that photo with the Big Four Mechanical Drawings that are also there (take the Memory Page link), you could just about build a model of it.

I am sure I am missing something. I have looked at those pages many times and I just looked at them again, and I don't see anything about the roundhouse. The drawings are pretty small and I don't see a picture.
Can you be a little more explicit, please. I really like your site and have looked at it many times, but I must be missing something.

That's the Big Four and South Anderson Yard photos. Go to the bottom for the photo.

There are enough dimensions on the Mechanical Drawing to get you started. There is nothing special about it. It is very like hundreds of other roundhouses.

I got to thinking about it and cleaned up a drawing of the roundhouse and have just added it to the photo description. The drawing is the original 16 stalls and if you compare the drawing to the photo, you can see where they cut the roundhouse at the firewall. It was the mid 50s roundhouse that I remember. I never saw the original 16 stalls.

Between LEW and the NYCSHS, I don't think we'll get much better than what we have now.

Thanks for the clarification and your work on cleaning up the drawing. It does look like a standard round house, but I haven't ever seen a picture of drawing of it. I lived in Anderson from 1940 till 1962, but the last time I remember the roundhouse must have been in the middle 50's.

There was about 15 ft.between the
front of the engine and the wall.
If my memory serves the big doors
could be closed on all but the L-3,
L-4. I believe the draw bar head
was the problem.Can't remember if
they cut a hole in the door.They
turned the L-3,L-4 on the turn table
but only had about 3 ft. on each
end.The body of the engine and tender hungover beyond the turn table. On the east end was a door
where you could enter and walk along
the front of the engines. LEW

HI, Does anyone know the make , designation or other on diesels #8207 and 8208. THey were supposedly rated at 3000 hp for the pair. THis was in 1951. Also, see my topic on Cincinnati Nortehrn. Jim

Jim, I thought I could just hop on to George Elwood's site to answer your question, but George is in the process of moving some of his files (I often wondered how he had the capacity to store so much material) and the NY Central diesel site is giving me a "404" not available message. I'll bet Ron Morse can answer your question.

In O. M. Kerr's "Illustrated Treasury of the American Locomotive Co." (which I bought for all the steam info) I found a photo of NY Central diesel 8205, which would be in the same group you are searching for. It is an RS-2 (Alco's designation, Central had others). It indeed had 1500 hp, B-B (four wheel drive trucks), and was delivered in 1949, before the end of steam. :D :D

THanks. THe last diesel to run on the CN was #5831. in 1977. Again I do not know the make but it looks like another ALCO. I know they had a few Baldwins, toward the end. I have steam rosters from the beginning and 1913 and 1924.Jim

My puter had some problems and I have been out of town awhile.
Anyhow 8207 and 8208 were nyc class ARS-16,built 1949. 8207 was renumbered 5207 in 1966 in prep for the mereger.All were gone by 1965
