My major bad. I haven't been beating the bushes for Katy fans. Living in Texas, you can find beaucoup katy folks from Denison south to Houston, and north to KC and St. Louis.
I've been considering doing some GP40s in Barringer red (to go with maybe one green Geep) to run on my Frisco layout as a detour.
Across the street from the restored Katy depot in Denison is the former location of the offices- it is now an antique shop (well, OK, a great big flea market), but in one room in the back, a group of local modelers is busy building an HO layout depicting the Katy thru Denison down to Greenville, and north over the Red River towards McAlester, OK.
I may be a Frisco modeler, but I recognize trhere were other railroads in the area, and I got as many shots of MP and MKT as I could before they were assimilated into Borgrail. Kudos to folks like Paul Cassar who keep the memories alive thru modeling.

hadn't seen anything in KATY paint in a long time that wasn't on a module. But the mom-in-law lives a half-block from the KATY main in Pryor, so I see some action up there from time to time and a bit in the OKC area as well. KATY fans are out there, bunches of them in the Tulsa area @ the GATS show a few weeks ago. Lots of KATY shirts, hats, cars, and locos going out the door

I'm a secondary Katy fan, having modeled the OKKT back in my HO days. (I lived about 4 blocks from the MKT/OKKT main where it crossed BN's ex-FW&D line)
I just about wet myself when I saw pics of the new UP "Katy Heritage" unit, and I think I finally did when I was travelling adjacent to the Choctaw sub one afternoon and saw her on the point of a parked freight near Roanoke, TX a few weeks ago. Got some great pics. The interesting thing about the new scheme is that I had dreamed up something VERY similar for a someday-layout depicting the MKT as if it never merged. (not surprising since both were heavily influenced by the Texas Special scheme, mine more so)

Only diesel you'll see now in Katy paint is the "blind cab" F-unit on display at the Katy depot in Denison. It shares space with several cabooses, including the 1024 repainted Sloan yellow with Sloan-type lettering (The KATY serves the Southwest Well). Thankfully, NO Deramus lettering :D

If I can find the URL, I'll show it here.

ALso, in the latest issue of Great Model Railroads, there's an HO scale layout featured that depicts the Katy & KCS. Even tho what diesels shown are in the Deramus scheme, he does have a re-engined Baldwin and re-engined Alco, both of which look very nice.

I miss the Katy red....so thats what I have. I picked up an A-B-A set a couole of months ago.
The new proto units. Looks great and runs even better. I was using them in my open house in front of a mixed freight. Ran great for 2 days. Also ran my Texas Special (personal favorite) Then double headed mikes in front of a tank car train. Ran good also.

A month or so ago I bought a Katy caboose. I have no Katy engines. The E7s that pull my Texas Special are the Frisco ones. So, I have an undec USRA Mikado that is getting the MKT treatment. Little stuff like plating over the coal bunker and adding a dog house to the tender, moving the bell and replacing the steam pops with a turret. Slap some decals on and some big MKT shields on the side of the tender and hopefully it will pass. graemlins/wink.gif

Mr. straw, if you'd like, I can provide you with detailed (ok..not too detailed..)info on how to convert those frisco E7's to Katy...I seem to remember discussing the differences with my father a few times..

I think it had something to do with the small logos on the nose behind the anticlimber. That and the number boards. graemlins/wink.gif
I finished modifying and decaling the Mikado, #784. Now I have to reassemble it.

Sweet! Now all you need is a caboose done up in the Sloan-era scheme (yellow paint and the lettering "The KATY Serves The Southwest") bringing up the rear.

Sorry I haven't added anything to this particular forum lately, but this bit of news oughta interest you.
From the MKT group at Yahoo:
Miss Katy in the Lone Star State
Attention all fans of the MKT Railroad:
I am happy to announce that my eighth book, "Miss Katy in the Lone Star State-volume one" (The Good Old Days 1942-1960) book has been completed, proofed, and is awaiting printing. Expected publication date is mid-September. This hardback book will feature over 300 extremely rare "all color" photos of the Katy's operations in Texas between 1942 and 1960.
The book features both steam and early diesel. Since the book only makes it to 1960, almost 95% of the diesels featured are wearing their classy original MKT paint scheme. Steam includes: 0-6-0, 2-6-0, 2-8-2 and 4-6-2 wheel arrangements while first generation diesels include: E7, E8, PA-1, PA-2, FP7, F3, FA-1, RS-3, GP7, FM H16-44, GE 70 ton, NW2, SW9, DS-4-4-1000, and AS-16.
Passenger trains are well very represented with coverage of the TEXAS SPECIAL, BLUEBONNET, KATY FLYER, HOUSTON BLUEBONNET and Trains #31 and 32 (later renumbered #11 & 12) to Wichita Falls. A large number of photos are devoted to the Katy's RDC-3 including a never seen before color photo of the car's interior.
For those who model Katy passenger equipment, this book is thoroughly loaded throughout with all types of passenger cars. Separate chapters include the original 1947-1948 streamlined equipment (including all 14 cars), the additional heavyweight cars added in 1948, and ends with another two dozen photos including
everything from the Darby cars, to all types of heavyweight mail storage, express cars, chair cars, diners, the new TEXAS SPECIAL replacements, and the line's beautiful fleet of business cars.
All lines in Texas are featured including rare 1940's and 1950's action on the Mineola, Belton and Tin Can Subs. In San Antonio you will see how the TEXAS SPECIAL was cleaned and serviced each day (all in color!) and Houston fans should be thoroughly blown away by the amount of coverage in the state's largest city, including passenger operations. Other high points include separate chapters on Austin, Waco, Wichita Falls and the high point of the book are a large number of never seen before color images shot at Waco and Temple in 1951. As with my past books, I always include a separate chapter featuring depots (in order of their milepost) and I am happy to announce that the Katy book features 70 Texas depots, most of which are now gone.
The listed retail price for the book is $59.95. However, if you order the book direct from me before September 1st you can get a "signed copy" for only $46.00. Texas residents MUST ADD 8.25% state sales tax ($3.80). Shipping is $4.50 (Priority Mail) and for those wishing to add insurance, please include $1.35.
All copies purchased direct from the author will be signed copies and can be personalized and dated such as "To Robert, best wishes and happy railroading!" (for example) upon request with your order. The books are expected to arrive sometime in September and will be shipped out in the order that they were purchased. Any updates on the arrival of the books will be announced as I receive them.
Please note that I DO NOT accept credit cards. Checks and money orders only. Send orders to:

I went to Trafford, AL last Sunday (July 23,2006) mainly to see if I could find some old section hand housing on the old L&N (Nashville to Bhm, now CSX))that an aquaintance of mine lived in some 40 yrs ago. Whilist there a northbound manifest went by and to my surprise there was a green MKT cement hopper, the short type. Also had painted reporting marks of a leasing co, too fast for me to get them down, something like LERX or similiar. Made my day since I grew up on the Katy in McAlester, OK. Walter Boatner, Alabama

I grew up in Greenville, and fondly remember the passenger trains, cabooses in red, and later in green/yellow. I also remember KCS pulling in with F-units and GP30's in red and white. If anyone wants to know rememberances or track layout of Greenville, I'm the one to contact.

Can't wait to get back to Tejas.............

Greetings, this is the first time I have posted to this forum so please bear with me. I noticed in one of the posts above that the Mineola sub was mentioned. I would like to find out more about this sub if possible.
