I'm looking at my next custom paint job and am interested in modelling a couple of MKT locomotives. My question is did MKT have GP40's?

If so can someone point me in the right direction to some sites or post some pics for me?

Thanks in advance.

The MKT had a lot of GP40s, both with and without dynamic brakes. Many were bought used after they came off lease from Conrail.
Check out:

and

Hope this helps.

If you go to to Yahoo Groups And go to the "MKT" group ( you will need to sign up with the group no charge). When you get there go to the photo section the find the album SD40-2.
I scan and and inserted the artical about modeling SD40-2 for the Katy. This was the write up in Model Railroad Craftsman April 94.
I built 3 units from this publishing and they run great. All 3 units have pulled 110+ cars.

Thanks Martyn I was worried for a while that I was custom painting two geeps as part of my UP fallen flags strategy only to be found to be incorrect lol.

I know you've done Mopac as well, have you tried any Western Pacific yet? smile.gif

All 4-axle as far as I can tell, unusual for a mountain railroad. Might mean more GP40's!

I think that merger was early 80's, any confirmation on that one folks?

Yes Martyn, that's correct. Unlike the MKT, no SD40s on the WP.
The merger was 1982.

No six-axle whatsoever- their EMD hood power (not the F-units) consisted of GP7s, GP9s, GP20s (all high-nosed), GP35s, GP40s, and GP40-2s. They also rostered U23B and U30B diesels from GE, which ran on EMD's Blomberg trucks.

As for Katy GP40s, all of MKT's original GP40s arrived on the property without dynamic brakes, and were originally painted in a red scheme- they later recieved the so-called "John Deere" colors later. Any dynamic brake-equipped GP40s came from Conrail, and either ran with a "patch" job or the full-blown Katy colors. Judging by the looks of the ICG and Kennecott castoffs, paint was not much of a priority as was the unit's ability to load up & pull tonnage.

It's just a matter of checking roster shots to get the right road numbers, and as mentioned earlier, George Elwell's Fallen Flags site is an excellent reference source.

Thanks for the help guys it has been most informative, at this stage I'm considering doing a Conrail patch job as well as a few John Deere greens

Now if only Frisco were merged with Up i would have a perfect excuse to do a couple of Frisco Geeps :D

Frisco and UP had power runthroughs through Kansas City, most notably on the NWF. I've also seen UP power on grain extras on the Afton Sub, and a friend of mine out west has shot Frisco power on UP freights, at least between North PLatte and Omaha.

So it wouldn't be much of a stretch to have, say, Frisco U30Bs or SD45s, in a UP power consist.

After what UP has done after mergers, I'm glad Frisco didn't get Borged!!!

Frisco and UP pooled power (http://www.witherspublishing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=27_34&products_id=106) and a lot of Frisco motive power showed up on UP trackage from Cheyenne, Wyoming - even as far West as Washington State lashed up with UP locomotives.

One other thing you may consider- the MKT main and Frisco's busy Cherokee Subdivision intersected at grade in Vinita, OK. This nifty little arrangement made it easy for the Texas Special to run from St. Louis to Vinita on Frisco, then on Katy south to Dallas/Ft. Worth and then San Antonio. Other SLSF/MKT interchanges were at St. Louis, Kansas City, and the D-FW area. ALso, Katy ran on Frisco trackage from Kansas City south to Paola, KS, where it split off on a southwesterly route toward Parsons and the southwest.

And for a retro look, paint one of the GP40s in the red & white scheme introduced when John Barringer ran the Katy. A GP40-F7B-GP40 lashup, in red, would look sweet.

When UP decided to retire the ex-WP geeps, i.e. the 35's and 40's, we recieved the ex-MKT GP40-2's. They were trashed and took about 6 months in the shops off and on to become decent units. Once up to snuff, they became standard local power and were used as switchers on the west end of Stockton yard.

I prefer the Barriger red with the proper MKT logo over the Deramus red with his sorry excuse of a logo- "KATY" in red on a yellow whatsis. graemlins/shakehead.gif

Only problem with the red, it would tend to fade kinda quick in the Texas sun. Several of the retired switchers I shot in Ray Yard in 1987 were in a faded red scheme (almost pink).

Nice modeling job. Yeah, kinda like that.....even before the remotoring in the late 1950s. Perfect example of the Deramus abomination laughingly referred to as a "paint scheme".

PS- did you paint this one?

I do all of my painting. It's a little more to the pink side. The photo looks a little on the orange. There is a photo of this RS-3 in Katy Power book. If you will look at the photo in the book it is as close to a copy as I could make it. This unit has Kato drive in it and is DCC. It make a good switcher. This is the only Deramus Red unit I have with yellow decals.
But it looked like a good good unit to model. Besides I had an RS-3 body, any ole' excuse I think...LOL
