Howdee all,

I know that the Big Sky Blue scheme actually used a dark gray.

What modeling color do you guys use to represent this? I've tried "grimy black", but that seems a bit too light.

DiezMon,

What brand of paint are you using? Looking at the Floquil color charts in my Walthers catalog, I think MILW Gray might work. The Big Sky Blue gray was a medium gray. The grimy black is way too dark.

You might do a search through Google and see what you find. Also, the GN historical society will have the information you need, I'm sure.

Tim-

I'd tend to believe the grimy black would be too dark. My memories of the BSB scheme were of a lighter shade. Perhaps more like a primer gray.

so , for clarity, I'm talking about the gray on top. When I look at any of my GN pictorials, it looks almost BLACK to me.

According to the gnrhs, the colors are:
<div style="background-color:#363630;height:30px;width:200px;"></div>
<div style="background-color:#0078AB;height:30px;width:200px;"></div>
<div style="background-color:#ffffff;height:30px;width:200px;"></div>

It's been many a long year since BSB was introduced. And it's life was fairly brief.

Even the blue they show seems too dark for me.

Maybe I'm remembering it after a few years of weathering. Or maybe the years have simply dimmed memories.

Tim smile.gif Hi Diez;

I used Badger Modelflex paints for my nscale SD45's:

Big Sky Blue; Reefer White; and NYC Dark Grey

The grey on the prototypes darkened significantly over time that everyone thought it was black .. it is not black.

Happy painting.

I have heard MILW gray is close, for BSB units. Model Flex's BSB paint is close too.
See?

Boxcab E50 </font>'Yes.' & 'Yes.' smile.gif I had a severe bout of STML (short term memory loss).

BTW I updated my reply about those MOW numbers you posted in the other thread.

The placards are ready; just haven't taken the time to apply them. Thanks for the compliments.

Were you living out in Washington state for a while? Or am I thinking of somebody else?

Boxcab E50 [/QB]My Mother was originally from Snoqualime. I was born in San Francisco but grew up around Orland/Chico. My family moved to Yakima in late 1957 .. I joined the Navy in 1960-69 .. moved to Pendleton, Oregon in 1970-1980 where I re-entered the Navy and finished a 22.5 year career. I now live in Wilmington, OH with my wife (hometown country for her).

Though I well remember SP Shasta Daylights and WP California Zephyrs and loved them dearly, it was the Great Northern I ultimately came to love and model. Yes, I know NP was predominant around Yakima and I am also a NP fan/modeler as well, but it's GN that's first with me. :D

Maybe I am thinking of somebody else.

I spent most of my life somewhere in, or very near the Snoqualmie Valley. Love the area. But they're nuts out there now. So we decided to leave.

I saw a fair amount of GN in my life. The last of their steam. A glance or two around Skykomish, when wires were still live. And now live in Goat Country. (The GNHS convention is here this summer.)

But I grew up along a thriving NP branch line. In a family with many railroaders. NP, logging, and predominently Milwaukee Road. So Milw and NP are where it's at for me. And why I don't know the GN work equipment numberings....

Hope to see you posting here often!

nice HH Geep20, Tim!!
The SD45's would look great next to Grant Eastman's F45's coming soon...
I have a pair on order, destined for BSB.....

As for Z, my wife is getting into it now.. Sure has a lot of neat stuff avail. in Z,a ndgetting better! Now, if AZL would release SD45's in a more affordable plastic version... That, and SD40's, Deuces, tunnel motors, etc, etc...
