Ah yes..........Looking back on what it should STILL be, and NOT what it has become!!

Nice photo!!

What's the power?? Can make out at least 2
Tunnel motors, but not the lead or last units.

Thanks Alan, it makes it worth posting more if I get some feedback.....

Keith
That's the 3078 on the lead (a GP40), you are right about the two tunnel motors (looks like 5351, and possibly the 5348), and the trailing unit appears to have one dynamic fan, can't see the numbers.... maybe another GP40....? Sorry, between the scanner and the downsizing of the image, a lot of detail is lost. It's hard to pick out without the slide projected on a screen, but did you notice the 6th car back? It's the two tone, orange over silver 50' box.

Here's another manifest headed westbound just upstream of Glenwood Springs on the same trip. Led by 5329, 3053, 3020, and 3116 (SD45, GP40, GP30, and GP40-2).

Here's SD45 5334 leading a westbound out the west portal of Moffat tunnel, with a TOFC train, and helpers on the rear.... lest we mention a hack with crew on board too... back in August of '78.

I love it! Keep 'em coming!!!!
Anything from the other canyons? Gore, Byer's, Fraser, South Boulder?

I agree with Hemi. Keep those pictures coming! Having grown up in Grand Junction, CO I really miss the days of seeing the Aspen gold roll by. These pictures bring back the memories of the good old days.

Sorry Hemi, don't even know where those other canyons are, can you elaborate for educational purposes?
Here's one somewhere near Dotsero cutoff, but I can't find any notes on this one. I remember this was a westbound, but don't know the closest siding name.... anyone? This is from the same trip.

Jeff,
Click this link: http://www.ghostdepot.com/rg/maps/profiles/drgw%20profile%205.gif
It shows the RR's profile, stations and sidings from Denver to Dotsero, and this next one shows The Dotsero Cutoff:
http://www.ghostdepot.com/rg/maps/profiles/drgw%20profile%209.gif
Tons of info here:
http://www.ghostdepot.com/rg/mainline/mainline.htm

Also, what's the number of the trailing unit?
The leader's an SD45, and the next 2 are Geep 30's, but I can't make out the last one, likely a Geep 40 variant.

Sorry, that's the only pic of that train.... 5335, 3002, 3028, and the last unit I can't see the number boards (except for the last digit which is no help), and the cab is too dirty, either a 40 or a -2.
I have tons of maps also with the siding names, gradients etc, (thanks though), but I was thinking that someone might recognize the location, as it could be more than just a couple sidings either side....

I think I went through most of those sites that you provided links to, in an effort to find the mentioned canyon names.... Am I missing something? Great references for DRGW. Those topo views from USGS are taxing me to find them also. Give me a clue where to find those canyons.... you have any pics?

I have pics of both Fraser and Byer's canyon, but I'd have to look for a reference site.
The pics were from Amtrak #5...
I have personally never yet railfanned west of East Portal.

Click again on http://ghostdepot.com/rg/maps/profiles/drgw%20profile%205.gif and maximixe your screen. Maximize the image size, and look about halfway down the page.
Fraser Canyon is in between Tabernash & Granby.
Byer's Canyon is in between Sulphur Springs and Parshall.
Gore Canyon is in between Kremmling and Azure.

Those locations look to be fairly easily accessible by road?

Great pictures! smile.gif

Thanks Hemi
Open ye eyes and ye shall see! Those maps have some cool info after closer scrutiny. I recognize Byers canyon after seeing your pics, but not Fraser. I think I remember thinking that it would be a great place to snag a pic, but no traffic in the area.... maybe on the next trip.... it's been almost 30 years since I went through there! Nice photos, they sure give an idea how curvey the main is through the canyons, as you can get a good view of the rest of the train.

Phippsburg area on the Craig branch, CO in 8-78. Three 40T-2s (and a light package that only a DRGW and Espee fan can appreciate) with a unit train of coal. Barely see one of the conveyors in the upper left that brings coal over the hills to the loadout.

Rear end of unit coal (my favorite coal gondola, the thrall car) leaving Grand Junction in 8-78. I think this is a westbound...? Only shot I have of a black cab on the DRGW.
