I shot this stripped/boarded-up Geep 30 in the Coors brewery complex, in Golden, CO:

Any more like her?

Next time you come down, I'll take you to one of the UP yards and show you their MOW train, that still has one of these. It looks a little better (emphasis on little smile.gif ). It's close to where they keep the ski train...

Here's the Good news, regarding the 3011.
She's propertry of the Colorado Railroad Museum!! In storage at Coors until the Museum gets the $$$ together to get the 3011 onto Museum proper.

William:
Make it a weekend, that both Hemi and I have open......and you can count me in for a trip down, digital camera in hand, with several Empty media cards!!

Sounds like fun! At least the Geep isn't being scrapped...

Keith, you got yourself a deal! Jeremiah and I have started plotting a few spots worthy of attention. Where in Colorado are you from?

HemiAdda2d
March 16th, 2004, 05:29 AM
Too bad I don't live in Colorado...
But I know a few NICE spots on Sherman Hill for railfanning.... Maybe we can get together to see UP fighting its way up the hill, and maybe a layout tour of the BN High Prairie Sub!

Keith

William,
I'm in Longmont. About an hours drive north of Denver. About the same from Longmont to Cheyenne.

Hemi,
Might actually look foward to that!! Have not been to Cheyenne or a railfan trip in years!! Haven't had a reason to go.

Last time I was up that way, a friend and I were bumming around. Ended up being physically harassed by someone who claimed to work for the UP, failing to provide proof when we asked for it, 3 times!! Said we didn't deserve to see it.
Anyway....Almost 2AM, think I'm gonna quit early today.

There are a few really NEAT shots to be had on #3 track, and up at Dale Junction. One day, I would love to shoot Hermosa Tunnel.
If we do make a trip out of it, bring a windbreaker! tongue.gif

Before I get too off-topic, here's another survivor, although banditized.. :(

Hermosa Tunnel would be a great place to go!!
Been to Cheyenne many times in the past, with a friend. Rare was the day there was NOT a breeze of sorts blowing!! Up there, who needs gasoline, just raise the main sail!! :D :D :D graemlins/LOL.gif
Although, the same can be said for the stretch of Hwy betwen Boulder and Golden. Which is the reason for the string of hoppers one sees fom the road, on the upper section of the Big 10 curves.

The 5398 looks very good for a lease motor.
Too bad they have lined out the RIo Grande. That sort of thing shouldn't happen!!

You're tellin' me!
Getting rid of that red line wasn't all that easy!

Keith
March 30th, 2004, 02:54 PM
Well,
Lets be glad it wasn't any worse.
Could have scribbled out the name instead! Or blocked it out and painted over in some lovely, horrendous color!
Of course, if they wanted to do it the RIGHT way, they'd repaint what's necessary, by giving it a basic dip job in a LARGE can of black paint!! :D graemlins/LOL.gif

Keep in mind: MY opinion only.

And, incidentally, this picture is taken say 200 yards away from the old GP30!

The GP 30 picture was taken less than a month ago, the deadline picture was taken this past January, I believe.

I get to see the DRGW hoppers ALL the time!!
They plant 'em here in Longmont, for Valmont power plant in Boulder. Either a string of empties, or loads.
I've got photos of 3 DIFFERENT paint styles too:
plain Rio Grande, Rio Grande, the Action road, Rio Grande, the Action Railroad.
Would have to transfere photos from one computer to the other for posting, but I can add a few of thoem to my Rail Images gallery for those interested!

I took a shot of a Rio Grande hopper, this one with the 'Action Road' herald. Look for pics soon. I also have an MKT boxcar shot, a DRGW(B) F unit, Mopac buzzsaw and screaming eagle hoppers, CNW F unit and hoppers, and an ex-Rock grain hopper.

And look what I found today:

http://www.railimages.com/albums/album09/abt.sized.jpg

I don't know about HO modelers, but for N scale DRGW fans, this is a significant locomotive. It is one of only two DRGW GP40-2's that match the recent Atlas N scale release. (The other is 3130.)

Below you can see a back to back shot of the radiator intake fans of #3129 and #3118, a typical DRGW GP40-2.

http://www.railimages.com/albums/album09/abu.sized.jpg

For those interested in modeling it, I have a Webshots folder of shots I took today (with permission, I might add smile.gif ).

What I found today was caught between 52nd Ave cul-de-sac and the north end of the yard, just east of the Cargill grain elevator. All shot from what should have been public property, that I'm aware of! But, had no problems, so.........Gotta get out east one of these days!! No job.....No problem!!

Hey Jeremiah,

I met up with Keith Hahn and John Widmar and we had an educational time, to say the least! I'll post pictures tonight and tomorrow morning.

My wife and I plan to be there from about two or three in the afternoon. We've signed up for the pizza dinner and after that we'll do the layout tour. I'm interested to see how far the DANS layout has come.

We made friends with some good folks from the Oklahoma N-Trak club and so we'll probably be hanging out at their layout for a good while. You have my cell phone number - give me a call around that time and we can meet up smile.gif

Hemi,
If you have anymore photo's of Mikes layout could you do us a favour & post them,I need another fix of this fine layout.
BTW would you happen to know how Mike built North Yard tower, looks fantastic,I guess he must have scratch built it?

Benny
May 3rd, 2004, 04:35 PM
Well...if I rememebr right...doors are usually left open on overheated units...so yes, the crew is probably Irrate and it probably is dead until it cools down!

That is nice modeling.

About all the good pics I had, I posted. Most were motion-blurry, and the others were just plain underlit, blurry, or something.
North Yard Tower was prolly scratchbuilt. I didn't ask...

Interesting.....since both Craig Branch and North Fork Branch coal trains have to run thru Moffat, wonder if these trains will be detoured west to SLC, then east on the UP's Overland main thru Wyoming? Or will those mines just shut down due to lack of cars to load?

In either case, there's gonna be a lot of coal flooding thru Moffat down to Denver in the open running windows.

http://www.railimages.com/albums/album22/abs.sized.jpg I've seen several of those hoppers on North Fork Branch coal trains (and I've even seen relettered Frisco hoppers as well!) during my stay in Grand Junction. Incidentally, the guy that is/was offering these in N scale lives up the Gunnison River in Delta, where the North Fork Branch splits off the Montrose Branch (and where these real-life prototypes still roll).

As for the F-unit, I think it would look better with the other Fs out at Golden, but that's just me.....I hate to see such an example of a great paint job be lost.

In the past year or so, here in Central Texas, I have shot two basically untouched D&RGW EMD SD50s. #5503 and 5507 looked to be in very good shape with only the mars lights missing.

Will have to fire up the scanner and scan those shots sometime. Both units were shot in Taylor, Texas last summer but I still see them occasionally.

FINALLY managed to get to the museum today.
Got some shots of the COORS SW-8 as well as the Rio Grande GP30.
Definately going to require LOTS of work.

Bravogjt- those cars looked like they were in West Yard. The boxcars have been thre for quite a while (at least since 1999, IIRC).

Don't worry about quality- the fact you got these cars before they were Borged or scrapped counts first and foremost.

Hi all,
If you are looking for Rio Grande cars to shoot, there are still a few around on the western slope.

GJ: MOW Derrick and mates
Glenwood: MOW flat
Bond: MOW boxcars and such
P-Burg: MOW cars and such
Hayden: 40' boxcar
Kremmling: 40' boxcar
Tabernash: 50' boxcar

All of these were present this summer. Some could be gone by now. The San Luis Valley is rich with old boxcars converted to storage barns. There are also a lot of old RGMW trailers running about.

Time to send this one back to the top...
While on my last Moffat Route trip, I was determined to capture as many former D&RGW and D&SL signals as I could. The ones at Radium in particular are merely days from being removed, as their replacements are in place, and are facing perpendicular to the tracks... These signals date fromt he original CTC installation of the 40's. I also grabbed shots of the D&RGW signals on the Dotsero Cutoff, and points west, when I could.

Grande fans should also check out the museum in the Glenwood Springs depot. Admission is only $2 for adults and kids are free. They have a small assortment of signals and one of two Rio Grande Speeders on display. The other Speeder is running and kept on the other side of town.

Very nice shots, Ben! That GS depot musuem closes about 15-30 inutes before train time, IIRC. The one time I was out there last march, they had just closed for the day, and Amtrak 6 was late, as usual.

Here's the lame interstate-side shot on that same bridge at Canyon Creek, CO:

Steve,

We lucked out and found a volunteer cleaning up in the shop around the speeder. He was very knowledgeable and hopefully he will be working there on the day that you arrive. If you have kids he will actually let them get in the Speeder and explain what all of the controls do.

This book (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Railroads-of-Colorado/Claude-A-Wiatrowski/e/9780896585911/?itm=2) I recently picked up at Barnes & Noble had some neat CO railroad ghost info. A note in there said David Moffat's private DNW&P car Marcia, named after his wife, was on display in Craig, CO. Can someone confirm?

I do not believe so. The only water that I am aware of is the Colorado River. But then again I could be wrong. I will have to dig out a map.

Hemi,

Oops... You are correct. It is Utaline Siding. I access it through Rabbit Valley (http://parks.state.co.us/NaturalResources/CNAP/NaturalAreasInfo/AlphabeticalListing/RabbitValley.htm) which is approximately 4 miles from the Utah border. All you need is an ATV or 4 wheel drive to access the trails that lead you to the canyon rim. Several of the areas where I have taken pictures even have concrete tables where a rail fan can sit and wait for a train while eating some grub.

Its a 2 axle car so I'm guessing it has speed restrictions on it like maybe 25 MPH so I bet it don't get far from where its assigned just for that reason. They are not in big demand so I bet its assigned to a district or division like most MW equipment.
