The Conrail rostered a wide variety of locomotives during its existence. So what are your favorite(s)?

Hmmm...Conrail had an interesting fleet, it's kinda hard to pin down a favorite! I was lucky to catch run-through CR power out here on the SP occasionally. But if I had to choose 2 favs, I'd pick these:

1. SD40-2: One of my all time favorite EMD's, and the uniqueness of Conrail's units (Flexicoil trucks) makes them even more interesting.

2. SD45-2: There's just something about big EMD's!

C'mon, you have to go with something original!! Everybody had SD40-2s!!! Me, I'd say the Honorary Alcos, the C32-8s. Big beasts of engines. The C39s are not too far behind.

For an EMD, the 80MACs are my vote.

My choice for fav is clear in my mind: The '80MACs take it, followed closely by the traditional GP38-2.

I near a small industrial track; hence the GP38-2. I chose the 80's because there are not enough words in the English language to describe how beautiful they look in CR blue!

I go with Nick, the SD80MAC's and they had a very nice paint scheme.

Maybe, if CR still had existed today, they could have expanded that paint scheme to other locomotive types http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif????

The SD80MAC was an impressive piece of Conrail equipment that found its way all over the system, even to Anderson, Indiana.

I will have to dig through my "archives". I remember very vividly catching a pair of these units in Hamlet, N.C. in the CSX yard, with their CR logos painted out and a simple "VMV" stenciled on them (probably 10+ years ago,,,,)

I am a little surprised that nobody "voted" for the GP15-1's http://www.trainboard.com/confused.gif They certainly were unique locomotives.

You know what the problem is, its that there is just too much of a variety of power to choose from. You have everything from the 80MACs to the MT-4s. To list one fav is almost impossible, and most like the road power.

The GP15 is a cool loco, based on the Tunnel Motor design, it's supposed to be EMDs "next generation" road switcher. I think most RRs will stick with their 38s and 40s.

The C40-8W is the way to go for me. The first ever wide-cab I ever saw was one just after CR got them. I still don't know of a paint scheme (other than Ferromex from Mexico)that looks as good as a newly painted CR C40-8W. From a pulling ability the SD60M or SD60I did the job nicely for the newer generation locomotives. But from a performance standpoint my preferences always bounce back to the SD40-2 which could tug a train with minimal effort......

As someone pointed out early in the thread, Conrail had such a diverse fleet, it is hard to pick out a favorite!

I was digging around in my "archives" and was surprised to find that I had more CR photos than I had remembered. I'll will try and scan and upload some next weekend.

I like the older, smaller diesels. GP30 is probably my favorite. GP35's, RS3's, and the small SW9 switchers. I model in N scale. From 1976 to 1980. Many diesels and paint schemes to choose from.

First time for me on Trainboard. The C40-8W is still the one I enjoy most. Big brutish and with the chugging FDL engine, always a welcome sight when I'm railfanning. I'll be in Enola tomorrow; hope to catch a few still in their blue coats. GG1

Welcome aboard GG1! http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif Thanks for joining us in the Conrail forum. Don't forget to check out all of the other interesting forums on TrainBoard.

Yes, the CR CW40-8's are interesting locos, especially in the CR blue. Catch 'em while you can http://www.trainboard.com/frown.gif Let us know what you see in Enola; pictures are always appreciated, but a narrative is good too http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif
