Are friends and family of conrail allowed to answer http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif
LMS units are C40-8W that are owned by both CR and GE They would spend about 50% of there time on CR lines (peak times on CR) and then be leased out to other roads the other 50% of the time. The cabs may have said 700 but there true numbers on CR was0700 the 0 was added to avoid confusion with Amtrak units in Conrail's Computers. I am also aware that LMS also had SD40, ex SF U30C (might have been C30-7) in there roster.

Harold:
LMS stood for Locomotive Management Services, the Conrail-GE subsidiary that owned the C40-8W locomotives. As Chessie mentioned, the agreement for these units called for them to spend 6 months per year on Conrail and 6 months leased to other roads.
Chessie mentions other units that were leased out. These units were not LMS units, but were part of the Conrail Leasing (CRL) fleet which carried numbers from the 100-699 series on the Conrail roster. This fleet included GP38, GP38AC, GP40, SD40, U23B and C30-7's, as well as a couple oddball switchers. Some of the SD40's received 800 series numbers.

(Matt recovers from stupid strek)
NS hit the Nail right on the head about those other CR leasers. but still everything had the 0XXX number still in the computers.
I like what I have seen on some of the CSX "LMS<font size=100>X</font size=100>" http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

Yes, I have seen the locos show up on CSX as LMSX; it makes sense if the units are "private". Some of the units are now turning up with the "X", as I have captured at least on unit this unit way.

It is a passenger car from an inspection train.

I saw an LMSX unit #0701. it had the first"0" in CSX yellow on a little CSX blue patch. I posted this on the CSX forum, but no one really had a clear explanation. I would say that CSX is only doing this until they either 10 repaint it in to 79-- or else or 2)trade all of their share of LMS/LMSX units into EMD for more New SD70s and GP60's (unlikely, who would pitch a perfectly good CW40-8?? http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif )

Hi Harold , back around 1996 and 1997 CN was leasing those LMS units , they were on about every train we had :D
But they were just used in helper service .
Sometimes I see one from time to time .
