Some time ago I was looking at Don Ross's site and found a Milwaukee pipe gondola. It was one with the side panels removed. So I built one, it came out pretty nice! Now I would like to build the snow plow mounted on a steam tender. I found a match for the tender, just have to move some grabs, but I can't find a plow blade close to prototype. I have tried Walthers and a few other places but no luck. Can any one help me find the plow blade? Or a good way to scratchbuild one?

Andy-

I'm not in HO. But am interested in eventually modeling one of these in N scale. Do you have some good drawings to work from? These were everywhere, or so it seems to me. One on my layout is a must.

Boxcab, I'm basicly using the photos as a guide. I can get a pretty good idea of sizes by scaling the pictures. I do know they were 36' tenders. If you would like I can draw you out something When I get it all figured out. But if I can't get or build the blade I might as well for get it.

I have to believe that you can get something that will work. I'd like to see this done. I wish that Doug Nighswonger was on line here. He's very good at this sort of thing. But he doesn't participate in groups. Doesn't care to use the 'Net much.

Can't really blame him. Seems the more I'm on here the less modeling I get done.

Andy-

It had been a while since I last talked to him. So decided to give a call. Just got off the phone.

He has not built the tender flanger. His layout is early 1950's. (Tender flanger from scrapped L2- built 1956 and later.) But he did build a box car flanger. He suggested you look at, (couldn't recall which brand), either Athearn or Walthers rotary snow plow. It had a flanger blade underneath that was what he acquired. Thought perhaps you could spot one of these, used, at a swap meet to save a few dollars?

Anyhow, might be worth exploring. Hope this helps?

Oops! I almost forgot! Doug said that about two years ago, there were plans for one of the tender flangers in Model Railroader. I don't know what you have available to work from, and have no MR here to check. But this might also aid you in some way?

Boxcab, I recall the artical in MR I think it was for a G scale but I'll check my magazines. I have an old UP rotary plow made by Athearns. It has only the short blade. The blade I'm looking for is about 10' tall. I think I found one that I can use. It is on a IHC gondola plow, a freind of mine had it in a box of junk. I Think I can adapt it for what I need. Going to a train show this week end probably pick up a tender there. Then after I finish up a few projects I will start on it. tongue.gif Also check out the name by my avitar!!!!

Boxcab, You got my curiousity up, I had to find the artical. It's March 2001 MR. These are plans for a tender flanger, I'm building the tender plow. The photos I have are from Jim Sands, labeled Marion Iowa 1968. Its a reworked tender with just a tall plow on the front, no flangers. Only thing now is I'll have to buy two tenders so I can build the flanger too!!!! graemlins/220.gif

Oops! I was thinking you were building the flanger. graemlins/226.gif

Jim has a fantastic collection of his own, collected, and loaned photo scans.slides to draw from. He's sent me quite a few. He grew in a Milw family, so..........

Get two more tenders. Build the single and double versions! graemlins/088.gif Have a fleet! graemlins/LOL.gif

Yes. I did note what's above the avatar.
