The Milw BiCentennial unit, SD40-2 number 156, was painted twice. Supposedly after suffering damage going through a wash rack. I have been told that the second scheme applied was slightly different. Anyone know for certain? Photos? On the 'Net?

Thanks Sunshine, Now I don't know which one I like better the light blue or the dark. I did check that site but must have missed the second photo. The one I seen was the light blue one!!

Andy-

The person who told me about the repaint, was a Milw Coast division man. He said that it had been run through a wash rack, if memory serves me at Tacoma shops. And the paint had been severely damaged. I hadn't been able to find any really good comparisons amongst my collected views of the unit.

Yes. You can certainly see the difference! (Thanks Barb!)

I looked closely at the lighter colored version. I do remember the unit fading. But not that much. And the photo, if you view the surrounding landscape, etc., does not really appear to be color shifting.

It sure was a pretty loco!

Does anyone know when the repainting took place? Was it darker or lighter before or after repainting? Thanks!

As with many companies, locos were originally painted prior to the Bicentennial date. The Milw unit was done in 1975.

However, I do not recall when it was damaged in the wash rack incident. I believe, but please don't quote me, that it happened very early on. Might have even been in 1975.

The original blue, according to my memory, was a darker shade. Of course, as time went by, the paint would have lighted up with oxidization.

Wish i had a time machine to go back and check. Or take more photos!
