Another Question

So was the Red and White paint scheme early Burlington Northern, or late CB&Q? I distincly remember the red scheme when I was a kid as the early Geeps, or possibly SDs roared by my house. The red scheme gave way in the early 70s (?) to the more familiar green and white. Thanks for the info and happy modeling!!

<font color="336633">The red and white you saw was former CB&Q units that had not yet been repainted into BN, they recived BN numbers and a small white BN on the cab side until they was repainted.

Just a quick note, the last unit of any of the former roads that became the BN that was repainted was an ex SP&S RS3 which was repainted in 1978, all other units that never recived Cascade green had been scrapped b4 that date.</font>

Thanks Matthew!! I knew you would have the answer. I guess these things could have been CB&Q because I am thinking I was seeing them in the mid-to-late 60s. Anyway, just trying to get my childhood memories straight! Happy Modeling!!

Apart from anything awaiting delivery and having the paint changed,I reckon it would have may been some of the CB&Q U-boats with the larger white stripe along the flank - the original BN scheme.

Yes I am sure they are the SD's now that I remember. I am fairly certain I saw them in the pre-renumbering days as well as the post-renumbering/pre BN green paint days. Thanks for posting the pic, I have a name to go with a loco now!! Happy Modeling!!

The 1st unit to recieve green & white was CB&Q GP-40 629 in 1968. CB&Q's SD-45's & U23C's were delivered new in green & white in 1969.

The first units to have BN green and black on them were the CB&Q engines, but they were still CB&Q at the time and had the hockey strips on them. The first BN engines to wear the standard green and black were 6 (not sure about that)GP38's ordered by SP&S but delivered to BN.

So I was seeing these things prior to 1970? That seems likely because I also rmember that sometime between '65 and '68 the streamlined passenger service stopped running, and the road became all freight. Happy Modeling!!

A note: The last Unit repainted was indeed a RS3 SP&S how ever it was repainted in 1977 mid year in Hill yard / Spokane, I believe, but the year was 1977

Just a note, CBQ 629 was the first in Cascade Green and white stripe. They were labled Burlington intil the merger when Northern was added. The first units in the scheme we see today were the SPS GP38s the first units ordered by them from EMD since the GP9s :cool: tongue.gif smile.gif
