fuel tenders

Matt, I've gone through most of the BN stuff I have and haven't found any shots with a clear view of any fuel fillers. Where are they located? I would have guessed they were up top.
There an article in April 88 MR and another in RMC Dec 87. Not sure if these had drawings. Also the Mar/Apr 91 Diesel Era did an article on them as well. I'll check if I have that one, and I may have the MR issue as well.

Are the tenders still used today? I am an avid N scaler, and would like to model one. Whether or not they are still used, I'll exercise a little of my modeller's license,a nd build a pair. :cool: What could be a good starting point in n scale as the tank car?

There are still a few fuel tenders left in the Crawford Hill Helper service. Most were retired from fuel tender service and returned to the company tank car pool. The last active roster I have is from 1991. The tenders still active at that time were:

BNFT's
3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28, 30, 31, 32, 35, 36, 37, 38, 42, 45, & 47.

Again, I'm sure that many others have been returned since then, and with the properly equipped SD40-2's slowly being replaced, we can be almost assured of their complete disappearance in the coming years.

BTW, the properly equipped locomotives are:
BN
GP38-2's 2100, 2108, 2109,
GP40-2 3054,
GP50's 3100-3162
B30-7A's 4000-4119
SDP40's 6394, 6397, 6398

Hi Hemi and welcome!

I'd go for a MDC 50' tank as a starting point for the later tenders. Most of the tenders came from revenue cars used by the GN and NP and were of 19000 gal or approx 24500 gal capacity.
If you have access to del Grosso's 1980-91 BN Annual, there are several pages of info and photos there. Also, Diesel Era had an article on the in the March/April 1991 issue, and both MR (April 88, HO) and RMC (Dec 87, probably HO).

Were the tenders reinforced in the frames? did they have any structural pieces to make them unique from revenue service tanks? I have no books avail., but I borrowed one from the local library, and it had a couple pics. I'll have to borrow that one again. I think it was 'BN and Its Heritage'. tongue.gif

I believe there was a degree of structural reinforcement done on the cars. Also, running boards were added along the side like older tankcars. I think these would have disguised some of the reinforcement.

There are a few photos in the Glischinski book, BN and its Heritage. Page 171 & 87 are fairly clear however, I was not able to validate the information you requested. I have an Nscale one myself, it was done using a Kato tankcar, not totally correct, but it looks good between two GP50s. I filled it with lead shot and I have unimate couplings on it, I am pleased with it. You may get more information from the Microscale decal sheet, or try Emailing BN and ask them for a copy of the Engineering Drawingsof the tankcar.

Can one fuel tender supply more than two locos? I am guessing that in the above scenario (between two SD50's) the one tender could supply the one in front and the one in back - but what about a third engine?

What happens when 7266 runs out of gas? (petrol, gogo-juice, fuel) BTW - If MILW ever had any fuel tenders I would reckon there were old t-shirts in the fenders where the gas caps used to be smile.gif
