Location, Location, Location, Ed. I was at Interbay yard in Seattle yeasterday and it was crawling with greens. At the moment GP50s seem to be the populat item there, but also a small army of 38, 39, and a few GP40s. In addition a handful of SDs, including 9s and 40-2s. There were also the usual few switchers, including the omnipresent WCRC unit, Freckles.

BNSF comes through GJ, and also has a couple of engines and an ex-Frisco caboose (in BN colors) for local switching, as well as serving the American Soda plant in Parachute. The GP38AC (ex-Frisco) is in BNSF H1 colors, and the Santa Fe B23-7 is still in blue & yellow. Only BN colors left are the caboose. :(

I'm a Frisco fan, but I DID like seeing all that BN power rolling thru Afton, OK. Out here, I can't even recall the last time I even saw a Jolly Green locomotive.

Be sure to wander over this way, Monk, and we'll find you LOTS of greens. For better or worse, western Washington seems to be about the last place new power shows up. We still haven't seen a flag scheme or Tier II SD70M on the UP here. I spent 12 hours by the tracks saturday and saw more trains led by Geeps than by Dash-9s. I'm told this is because all the "good" power on the west coast goes to California due to their strict emissions laws. In any case, let me know if you get out this way and we'll give you the grand tour!

There is still some BN out there but there hard to find. Most of them have been patched with BNSF on the side with just thier road numbers still there. Most of the stuff you find here in Galesburg is H1 and H2 stuff.

Ed, Galesburg Railroad Days are June 22-23. I can't wait either. Railfanning and lots of it.

Might have to make it a trainboard reunion here. If I remember from Last year I think there was a few that showed up from the board.

Here in Beaumont, TX we are lucky enough to have BNSF, KCS, and Union Pacific all having yards (although modest) in town.

In the BNSF yard they had a Green and Black BN engine for quite awhile. Not sure of the model, but it had the all white front of the cab.

It was paired with a similiar Santa Fe Blue and Yellow war bonnet. Well recently the BN unit disappeared and there are two more blue/yellow war bonnets in its place.

Being a past BN modeller I like seeing it here in town.

This is off subject, but the UP yard is interesting because you see almost everything (motive power wise) through there. Norfolk Southern, Conrail, CSX, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, Cotton Belt, TFM, as well as other very obscure leasing companies. Everything from new SD70M to old GP35s.

I spotted a westbound BNSF freight in Debeque Canyon east of Grand Junction, and third engine back in the lashup was a GP38, number 2088, still in BN green and black with all-BN markings. There was another GP38, in BNSF H1 colors, with it- my guess is that these two units are going to either Grand Junction for local work, or elsewhere west of here.

The day before, I was rolling northwest thru Dalhart, TX, and spotted a BN GP39E (rebuilt GP30) in the whiteface scheme, sitting northwest of the UP diamonds.

For buildings, the former FW&D/C&S roundhouse in Texline, TX is still standing.

BN9900 - I was formerly "My UP".

Following up on this topic. I noticed "a little Green and Black" on a track in the local UP yard. It was buried too deep to get a close look....

There's about a 95% chance I am going to be in Galesburg for Railroad Days. tongue.gif Not sure how we could meet up, maybe lunch or something. Is anybody else planning on making it?

We had one of the regulars on the Bellingham switch today, BN 2899, a GP39 in the whiteface scheme. And for those of you who might be interested, she had a caboose on the train too. They use a couple of cabeese here in Bellingham for a couple of jobs that require a lot of shoving, namely switching Bellingham Cold Storage and on the Cherry turn. Even here, greens are getting rarer, but by no means rare yet! The Everett-Bellingham turn trhe other day was composed of 5 Geeps (38s, 39s, and 40s), 3 green and 2 pumpkin. They're out there.

Minot, ND is Great Northern *read: BN* country! I see lots of Dash 9's, most on intermodals/grain Z's. I also see TONS of the ubiquitous SD40-2's. Mostly on drag freights. I also see chopnose SD9's, Geeps in whiteface, and the oddball 70MAC on a coalie. I see lots of SOO Line/CP units, like Geeps, and SD90MACs/AC4400's, and Snoots, but that's another story! I have pics, and tons of them. ASK! tongue.gif

BNSF Vancouver WA. Yard has tons of Green and Black.
Mainly 39Ms and a couple Switchers. there's also stuff in H1 colors.

Most of the stuff on the Big unit Trains is GE H2 though.

speaking of bn out there, i noticed that most of the old yard stuff is now equipped with that stupid radio control device. all i heard on the scanner this weekend was a bunch of complaining about how bad this stuff delays switching and several problems yet. thank you utu.

Ed Pinkley#2
June 24th, 2002, 05:53 PM
Hmmmm Mitch the UTU didn't sign up for remote control the Railroads did.The UTU just has the option for the contract on it due to it being run by switchmen. The BLE wants the contract just as bad.It is being used in east yard right now.It only proves the Railroads will spend a million dollars to save a buck.

Mopac3092

i don't know the ble reps i talked to in galesburg hate it and the bnsf is only making guys with low seniority run it because the older guys they say are protected and don't have to do it, according to the contract. oh well anymore unions aren't worth the paper the contract is written on with the railroads, they will do with you want they want and your union leaders are letting them do it......
