Yeah, I'm a big fan of the SD-45s. My favorite are the Southern highnose units. I love the look of brute strength they have. Where I live I still see some flared radiators now and then (not former Southern units unfortunately). Of course, by now I'm sure most of them have been upgraded and rebuilt and aren't SD-45 internally anymore.

I know that SAL never had any SD-45s, even though Athearn sold one a few years back. The last 6 axle units purchased by Seaboard were the SDP-35s. They were used on both the TOFC Razorback and the Silver Meteor. The last units purchased by the SAL were the GP-40s and the U-18s. Both orders were delivered in the 'Golly Green Giant' paint scheme shortly before the '67 merger. The Gainesville Midland, which was owned by the SAL, did have one SD-40 that wore the same scheme as the SAL road units with GM lettering.

I think that the ACL did purchase some SD-45 before the merger but you'd have to check with those who know the ACL better. Check at the historical society and the SCLmodeler Yahoo group. There plenty of SD-45s on the SCL so any ACL units would have been included in this group. I don't know if any ended up in gray and blue.

I think this is the ex- Gaineville Midland SD40 unit.... it was kind of an orphan in that it had no dynamic brakes:

Yes, some of the SD45's actually made it into CSX schemes,,,,,, both the blue and grey and the stealth.

Some or all were transferred to the Clinchfield in return for their U36C's before the CSX merger.
