Guys

The Gainesville Midland was a short railroad that was owned by the Seaboard Air Line. When the GM dieselized it did so in a BIG way for such a small road. Check out this site, http://members.aol.com/seaboard1966 for a shot of GM#10.

I think I've seen and photographed this unit working the hump yard at Hamlet, N.C. I was struck by the "unusual" appearance of the roofline of the unit, due to the lack of dynamic brakes. This may be a photo of the same unit, "later in life": http://www.trainweb.org/csxphotos/photos/SD40/4600sbd.jpg

Denis,

We went to the Southeast Railway Museum near Atlanta on Sunday. They had a Gainesville Midland decapod on display.

Yes, that would be her later in life. Sure does not look as nice in SBD paint as she did in GM/SAL paint. Unit apparently is still in SBD paint with CSX letttering on what are now a yellow nose and end. YUCK.

She was the only NON DB SD40 on the SBD SYS and it still the only non DB SD40 on CSX. There are only a few non DB, non ex CR units on CSX. The others being the ex Durham & Southern GP38-2's. There may be others but I don't know what they are.

I thought this GM unit was the only non-dynamic SD40 on the SBC/CSX roster, but I hesitated to say so until I checked all references...
