The train is connected to standby power right at the front of the unit. Is the 228 one of those units that can operate on third rail power as the old FL-9s do?

So far as I know, the Gennies belonging to CDOT or MNRR are equiped for dual operation. (I am sure someone will correct me, if I am wrong.)
