"My" local freight...serves the region of the Northeast San Fernando Valley and Santa Clarita, Mon thru Friday. Most customers get daily car spotting if needed. It is known as the Saugus Local.

Nice picture Mike something we have been missing the past few days with our own Railimages site down. Looks like a fair bit of traffic banked up on the freeway in the background.

Looks as though the track was recently groomed?

Yeah...Paul...went to Plan B, to post an image...the freeway in the background is the I-5 (Golden State). Believe it or not...it is not backed up...it is fairly lightly traveled for the time of day I took the pic. You should see the parking lot it is at 7am or so!..and they want to build another 30,000 or more houses in the area!!! Where is all the traffic going to go...yikes!

Saugus? Is that on or near the Tehachapi Loop?

What is the leading diesel? Looks somewhat similar to a GP38? Can't quite tell. Numbering seems to fall into what was a yard engine series? But I don't follow very closely. So am probably very lost here.

I did some fishing around on John Barnhills outstanding website (http://ncespee.railfan.net/UP/upgp38m-2-3/upgp38m-2-3.html) for fun and I found that that is a GP38M-2. Probably some type of modified GP38? I noticed it wasn't a straight GP38 because of the blister configuration on the roof behind the cab.

great picture Mike, where was that taken if that's I-5? Is that south of Newhall? The Saugus line and Soledad Canyon are a division or two and about 50 miles south of Tehachapi I believe...

Well, Santa Clarita is just south of the Grapevine as you move into the valley and LA. The Loop is up 14 through mojave and off 58(?) towards Bakersfield. So yeah, this is a fair distance away.

Maybe GP38M is a Morrison-Knudsen designation? I think that was the case on the Espee as in an SD40M. Espee did that after a rebuild from M-K.

Yeah guys, where I am taking this pic is just south of the Santa Clarita area...technically it is in the city of Los Angeles (Granada Hills) at the corner of San Fernando Road and Balboa. (It's about 1 hour south of Mojave, and 1 1/2hrs from Tehachapi area). In fact the train is just about to enter CP Balboa in another 50' or so...off to my right. The unit is lettered on the side panel as a GP38-2. It was recently renumbered from unit number 2533. You can still easily see the former numbers they repainted over on the panel.
