What is this? I have finally decided it is a plain SD45. At first, I thought the frame was so long that it was an SD45-2 as on a tunnel motor frame, but compared to an SD45 picture, it is a regular SD45. (Also I thought the rear fans were further apart, but not so.) I was informed that it was a NS SD45 high hood converted to a low hood by EMD. Then painted and leased to CSX. Close? Any other info? Thanks.

It could be an SD45 that had been modified to SD40-2 standards and retain SD45 body. That is a fairly common practice.

I believe the original poster is correct. It's a unit modified by EMD and leased to CSX. That photo is too old to have made it part of the recent EMD/CSX unit swap.

Pat,
Didn't Espee do the same to their fleet of '45's?

Somewhere I read that they did. I think that the UP has done away with them by now. As a side note, CSX over the last few years has bought several standard SD40-2's from UP. So I guess CSX is keeping their fleet for a while.

CSX had a large block of SD40's that were purchased and remanufactured to SD40-2 standards by an outside vendor; they were in the 8400 series (maybe 70 units?) and they came from a variety of original roads (UP, SP, CNW, etc.) I believe all of these have standard SD40 type bodies (no SD45 flares or T-motors).
