In my years of railfanning, I have shot only about a half-dozen images worthy of being published.
What are your most favorite, most high-quality shots?
Here's a few of mine:

Whoa!!! Great shots! smile.gif
I am not sure that I have any that are "publishable" compared to those... :(

Actually is in the ModelTrainStuff.com gallery... because I put it there.

It's not very "railfanny" but I think its very good.
http://userpages.umbc.edu/~ekapus1/railwirestuff/Lansdowne_Caboose_2_031703.jpg Same deal as above.
http://userpages.umbc.edu/~ekapus1/railwirestuff/SCAN09.JPG
I have more, although after looking at them, they're not always qualitatively "good" railfan pictures. But then again, I guess thats not really why I go railfanning anyway.
Its such a crowded field already, with greats like Steve Schmollinger (sorry if I butcher the name), Rob Palmer, Lee King and MANY others consitently doing it better than I can. I guess thats why I go for the more "artsy" shots.

Choices, choices, choices...
Let's see if I can't use this opprotunity to make some bold statments about railroad photography...

Photography is what we make of it. Hopefully future generations will have more than roster shots of Dash-9s and SD70Ms to look at.

Whew! I'm not alone.
This is some really good stuff. Too bad we'll never see it in Railpace, etc...

Wow. My photography is more in the 'punishable' category rather than 'publishable' smile.gif as I'm quite the amateur, but you have some very impressive shots there.

Awesome guys! Thanks for sharing. You all have a good understanding of composition and light. Hemi you lead the viewer through the frame really well. Same for Ed, really like the dusk(sunrise?) shot. Brian nice use of strong color and graphic elements (Pete Turner comes to mind, from the photo/art world.). Abcraghead, details, details, they are really good. Goes to show you the "small picture" can be very powerful. And I'm a sucker for motion shots, my fave. Thanks again for sharing, it is good to see other ways of "seeing" to shake us up a little. Without even being aware of it, I can get into a cycle of just making the same picture over and over.

You just gotta know how we do.
Now, here are some more "off-the-beaten-path" shots.

I almost forgot my favorite:
http://userpages.umbc.edu/~ekapus1/railwirestuff/stdenis_Night_Von60m.jpg
I'm almost embarassed to talk about how I took this.
I stuck the camera on its tripod, set the count-down timer and pulled the trigger.
Then I cropped it a bit in photochop. It used to be my wallpaper.

I looked through my collection and I came to realization that I'm way too goal-oriented to be artistic. For example, I have an album full of pictures on Webshots of just two locomotives, because I intend to model them. I also, as some of you know, have an album on industries, for the same reason. Prosaic would even be a flattering term! redface.gif
Then I also have several railfanning shots, but these all have people in them, because I discover I'm more interested in preserving a memory of a fun moment than being artistic. Sadly, I discover that artistic considerations are at the very bottom of my priority list (although Jeremiah seems to want to take me on as a project! LOL)
But I'm very glad we're not all the same. I thoroughly enjoy watching all your good pics! This is a great hobby!!! :D :D :D

Both pics taken around 1983 or so. First one near tunnel #2, the other a SP shed near their maintenance yard in Tehachapi itself.

Since Atlas is producing in Nscale version of both the SD24 and SD26 model locomotive, I thought it would be apropos to post a pic of one I took some years ago. Taken in 1982, crossing over the north entrance road to Edwards AFB.

I wish this photo had come out clearer. I did not have my tripod with me and just shot from the hip. Here it is anyway.
