The blue loco is an Alco RS3m, the other is an EMD FL9. So, how are they related. In 1979, Conrail repowered the RS3 with an EMD prime mover. They also replaced the cooling fan with its rectangular housing and screen with two of the EMD, round, fan units.

This picture was taken of February 4th, at the Danbury Railway Museum, where both these units now reside.

Peirce- Looks like a pair of fans straight off an old GP7.
Darren- What is the box behind the cab of the chop nose? Must be an air filter upgrade?

They very well could be. I don't know where Conrail got the parts for the 1979 repower project. I guess, over the years, many RS3s were repowered.

Darren,
Which shop provided the RS-3u modification? Looks a bit like it's cousin, the RSD-15 "Alligator".
