The Eurostar appears to be getting power from the third rail. Other photos I have seen show them getting power through the pantagraph. Are they equipped for dual operation and how far do they run on the third rail? Also, is it common practice to have the third rail unprotected?

Gil, Eurostars have to draw power from the third rail at 750V DC within the UK, as they get to the channel tunnel they switch to overhead at 25kV and can then start to move!

Although we now have the phase 1 of the CTRL (Channel Tunnel Rail Link) high speed line completed so they use overhead catenary on this, and can run at 300 kph within England too! :D

Our own Gats helped to make this possible as he was involved in the signalling system smile.gif

This reminds me of Metro North. The Conn DOT cars from New Haven to Grand Central run under the wire until they pass New Rochelle and then they switch to shoes. Another interesting thing is that the old New York Central used under running third rail while the Long Island uses over running third rail. The equipment on LI and MN can not be interchanged. I believe the NYC was only location with under running third rail in the US.

There is a real apeal to trains that are non-typical to your own area. I've always liked the space age look of the fast trains. Feels like I'm in tomorrow-morrow land. http://www.railimages.com/albums/alanwickens/aam.sized.jpg

Love that Eurostar pic, but it is only one of many excellent ones. The variety makes it fun.
