I have an album set up in Rail images, but when I tried to post the pictures here, I got the dreaded red X.
Can someone explain to me what I might be doing wrong?

If you can show us just what you did, we may be able to spot the error.
There are two common methods, both require you copy the URL of the image from Rail Images. Once you have done that, start your message or reply. In the input form put the curser on the line where you want the top of the image, then click on the IMAGE button. Paste the URL in the pop-up form and click on OK. That should put the properly formated image command in your message.
The other way is to do the same thing manually by typing in the command like this:
your image URL

I can tell you what your doing wrong, but I can tell you how I get my images to show in TB.
If you have the pictures uploaded into RI then have the battle is won.
1. Start a post or reply in TB. Scroll down below the orange line under the "Add Reply" and "Preview Post" buttons, and look for the button that says "IMAGE" (lower right of the 10 buttons). When you want an image to be in your post, click that button. A dialogue box should appear that starts "http://" and it is highlighted blue.
2. Open another secession of Internet Explorer (or whatever your using to get onto the net) and go to www.railimages.com. (http://www.railimages.com.) Go to you album and pick the picture you want to add to your post. The picture should show up in a preview window. Under that window there will be something like this, "http://www.railimages.com/ album / your album name/ the image name.jpg". Highlight the whole text string and right click, then select copy, NOT copy short cut.
3. Go back to the other secession of TB and in the dialogue box that opened when you clicked on "IMAGE", paste the text string that you just copied from the RI secession. Make sure you have the whole text string and that it does not start with two HTTP texts.
I hope that helps, if not let me know what you album name is and I will try to post one of your pictures as a test.
that should do it
