The Mexican government has reversed its decision and will now allow KCS to purchase controlling interest in Grupo TMM aka TFM. Now KCS can rebuild the old Macaroni (SP Victoria Sub) between Rosenberg and Corpus Christi so they don't have to go all the way to Flatonia on the UP. Short cut to the Tex Mex. Can't wait to go chase some trains down that way again.

Russell-
Is this SP line one that has been out of service? And, for those of us who don't know, could you explain "Macaroni?"

Boxcab E50 Yes, the tracks still exist down to maybe Warton but UP just uses them to park bad order cars on the tracks between Rosenberg and Beasley. They sold the right of way to KCS a few years ago. In 1881, Italian financier Joseph Telfener began construction of the New York, Texas & Mexican Railway (a.k.a the "Macaroni Line") from Rosenberg to Victoria. Old Joe imported Italian laborers to build the line and was rumored to pay them with macaroni when currency became scarce.
The NYT&M was later acquired by the Southern Pacific system and its operations were merged with the GH&SA in 1905.

So KCS would have to fight the NIMBY's, and put tracks back in that are presently removed? This could be an expensive endeavor.
It's interesting how some RR lines acquired their nicknames.

However the county governments along the right of way have been very aggressive in keeping squatters off. They have been pushing for this for quite a while. They like the tax revenue an active line would generate. graemlins/222.gif

 Holy cow!!! That's amazing! Someone does exist, who understands needing the tax revenues a private business can generate. Maybe there is hope of stemming the rails to trails tsunami of waste.
