KCS, IC gain approval for trackage rights agreement
Kansas City Southern has obtained trackage rights on Illinois Central’s 92.5-mile line between Jackson and Palmer, Miss.
KCS and Canadian National-owned IC reached the deal in May 1998, and sought approval from the Surface Transportation Board. The STB gave its approval recently. KCS told the board that because it was able to operate via haulage rights, it didn’t exercise its right, granted in the May 1998 agreement, to convert the haulage rights to trackage rights and so didn’t previously seek a trackage rights exemption from the STB.
The line will enable KCS – which connects with IC at Jackson – to move traffic currently handled by IC per a haulage agreement with CN. The transaction also will enable KCS to improve its operating efficiency between Jackson and Gulfport, Miss., KCS officials say.
KCS’s line between Gulfport and Palmer is otherwise physically isolated from the rest of the KCS system. KCS lines in the area were all acquired from former Mid-South Rail.
(Personal note: It should be mentioned here that Mid-South was a spinoff of former ICG lines in the mid- 1980s. The spinoff included various former IC and GM&O lines)
