Microsoft Train Simulator vs Model Railroading/Railfaing (Yes they can coexsist!)

Many of you are worryed that when Microsoft Train Simulator comes out that the Model Railroading industry and Railfaning hobbys will be threatened.

I disagree

Severly Disagree

There will still be nothing like going trickside and photographing, or watching that intermodel, mixed freight, or coal drag go by. Nothing like riding a excursion behind a 1800 or early 1900 steam locomotive. Nothing like building and operating a model railroad of any size tipe or scale. (DCC or DC)
Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS) was made by the same team designing Microsoft Train Simulator (MSTS) Many people who play MSFS actually go to get real flight training after playing that game, or become Plane fans (the hard to beleve but true flight equivalent of a railfan) some even build model planes. If anything I think it may help the industry/hobby. now sure someone cant drive a train in real life as easy as someone can go to learn how to fly a plane for instance. (In some cases having a ton of railfans learning to drive trains might be a bad thing) but it will may be able to help the model industrys and railfaning itself. Playing that game might be the one thing that persuades the nonmodeler to become a modeler and build a layout. Now granted there will be those who buy the game who are modelers and probily never touch there layout again but those people were probily the "my layout doubles as a storage table" armchair modeler to begain with.
Personally I dont expect Train Simulator to be to entirely popular with the general "TrainHating" public. but for those who do buy it, it might be that last thing they need to become "one of us"

(Yes E-8 I know this topic probily should be in the club car but I want the people who dont visit that Board to see this to.)

While running this game, if I am running a five lash up with 18,000 tons of coal behind, and start down a 1.5% and see a dump truck loaded with gravel stop ahead on the crossing; my question is this: "When I hit that truck at 45 mph, does it also crash my computer?"

OK enough guzzling. Mindyou, you are always welcome to drop in here in Georgetown for a cool Sleemons or two. I for one, can't wait for this railroad simulator. I enjoy the flight simulator too but the best simulator I experienced was those real aircraft ones that are used for pilot training. A real sit in cockpit. Now with railroad simulator maybe a cab like a Berkshire!! Possibilities EH!

What I am hoping is that eventually one can buy a camera which will record your layout, incorporate it into train simulator, chose the engine your are running, and be able to control your engine from the computer, running through the layout. Having said that, it still won't be as good as running your layout on on a "walk around" basis, but it certainly be second best.

Personally I can't wait for the game. It would be great for winter days in Ohio when it is too nasty to go out. It will NEVER replace the actual trainwatching experience.

When it does come out, I guess you guys can bundle up, sit on a flat car with your laptops, and play trains while I run one and pull you through the Royal Gorge! Hi Ken and welcome to Trainboard. You will find a great bunch here. If you call your PC antique then you should see mine. It must be ancient history with a P pcu running at 200mhz. At least it is able to get me to Trainboard. No upgrade in sight for me because of no money.
