Ok... it's a no brainer to not open suspicious email to avoid computer viruses. BUT in my outlook express... when I click on my "inbox" it automatically opens the first message in line. also it opens any hi-lited message, so... what if that first message has a virus, I can't help but open it. also how on earth are you supposed to delete a suspicious message when it opens as soon as you mearly hi-lite it.? I have looked for settings but can't find them is there a secret way to shut off the automatically open appon hi-lite.?

Hi,
Have you looked at the settings in "Tools"...."Options"
Also most viruses appear to be sent as attachments (please correct me if i'm wrong) and I assume that your Outlook does not automatically open attachments other than maybe a preview of graphic files which should not be a problem.
Best wishes
John.

You have to go into the settings. It is a real pain in the you know what. It took me a long time to figure it out. Click on tools then options and go from there. Good luck.

Yes most virus are attachments.. BUT NOT ALL..

Yes outlook will open the selected mail, I too find this ANNOYING UNCLE BILL  but this will not do anything to an attachment. You physically have to open an attachment. Some mails can have code in them to automatically open somehting from a site that will infect your machine... IT HAPPENS.

Depending on your Virus scanning software you can tell it to scan any mail/attachment prior to opening it..
Good idea! ;)

I keep on getting "HAHAHA.Snow white and the 7 dwarfs" this damn virus (with Attachment) is very nasty, first time I got this, my computer did a wobbly, screen went multie coloured. Lucky for me my Son David who works all day as a computer programmer, just about to leave for work, spotted it and said "S*** move off the chair Dad, I'll sort that".
I was lucky. I have had many since from this person but now know what to do, DELETE it which sends it to Deleted items, then DELETE again, imediately.

I keep getting the same 'Snow White' e-mail too Paul, but I have never opened it. I do not open anything from anyone I do not know. I know that alone is not enough to avoid some virus' but I went into Tools, then Options and then 'Read' and changed the time it takes to open a file without you clicking on it yourself. That way it gives me enough time to look at the subject and to delete it before it opens. I have had no problem since that danged KAKWORM got me!

You can also set up your e-mail and news so that any incoming item from a person or address you do not want to open, will be automatically sent to Junk Mail, or Deleted. We kept getting junk from "EMAZING" so I entered that into my Junk Mail with order to Delete. Now I just watch the Delete box when I first call up E-Mail, and do a right click on Delete, then click on "Empty Delete Box" and everything is gone. I also have Norton Virus scan set to Separate any viruses and just delete them. All Spam is done the same way. My Firewall will be up dated again soon to weed out all Java,. because we are having the greatest number of "attachments" entering through the Java Packets used by the kiddie shows, which we used to just delete. The Firewall has keep us clean for 41 days and Norton is isolating Java, so we are pretty clean now, and operating fast again.

Since most viruses attack Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express, one way of avoiding them is to use a different mail program. Netscape's mail program is quite good as is Eudora.

I agree totally ... I use the e-mail client in NS6 and am quite happy with it.

I too get this 2 times day! But again if you dont open the attachment, it does nothing.

I have tried with My isp to trace where it comes from.

Apparently it infects Outlook totally and can only be disinfected by uninstalling and reinstalling WINDOWS! You cant uninstall the infected part of outlook.. And this is how it is transmitted constantly. It sends from your machine without being traceable. It leaves nothing from your machine or ISP in the header.. Impressive Virus!

I have gone back to netscape 3.03 for mail!

Eudora is my next stop for mail ... The only thing I dont like about it is that it is another program that I dont really need!

what do you do though!

I figured out how to get rid of the problem I asked about. In Outloox Express5, click "view" then click "layout" then click off the "preview plane" checkmark. (you must be in an area like "inbox", "deleted", etc. or the box is un-clickable) I like this better too because it brings up the email to be read in a new window and is easier to read than the stupid half page way before.
Just thought someone else out there would want to know. :D
