I have been editing and creating some new pages on my "note pad" and saving them as .txt file on my floppy. Is there a way to see what the page will look like without uploading it to my site server first? If I change the name from whatever.txt to whatever.html will that work?

Seems like I remember getting my sign on pop-up whenever I click on a saved .html file is there another way to "preview" my progress? (without signing on and uploading it to my host server)much obliged

Yes http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

I use a program called Edit Plus that is a text editor that opens .txt or .html (or any similar) file. You can work on your file and hit preview and it will show you your work in Netscape or Internet Explorer.

You can download this program at http://www.editplus.com

It says that it is good for 30 days but it seems to work forever as I have been using it for about 3 years. http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

I use NoteTab Lite. Works real well and the price is right. FREE. It is what I use for my two sites plus the Links Page.

Esppe, have you got 1st Page 2000 installed as yet?
I noted in the other thread you have managed to locate an un-zipping program.

1st Page 2000 is superb! It has several differnt levels, from "easy" to "hardcore".

I use it for all my site building.

I couldn't get it to open with any zip tool I heard it must be corrupt file, so I went with the "note tab" :D As I stated to detail in the other thread, "gozilla" got deleted from my programs too because of their practice of bringing along a few unwanted guests. (gator/online companion encrypted with "spyware") I am learning fast! :D

Come on people! you only need Notepad for HTML!

save the file as .html and view it with IE...

Yes, you sure can and I myself used Notepad for several years but it helps to have a text editor with a few bells and whistles to speed things along, automatically duplicate keystrokes and catch syntax errors as you type and also the one I use shows the different HTML tags in different colors which makes it much easier to see different parts of your page quickly.

I tried notepad for about one page and was too frustrated at the side-ways scroll, and the way it makes your pages 2 inches tall and 6 feet wide when editing. I am used to a standard editor, I can tell what a page will look like just by looking at it's source, and I can't do that looking at notepad. I like my new "note tab" editor! :D

You can hit enter at the end of the screen to break lines up. Suppose its the same as the small window here to type text in..
As for the viewing the file locally, is to just save it as .htm instead of .txt..

Below where you put your file name is the box where you select the file type. Change that to be all files then you can save it as HTM or HTML Then use IE to view the page.

REMEMBER..
1) if viewing a page local that has images on it, you need to include the path to the images (EG. c:\images). if you upload a page with this path in the code, (EG. c:\images), the images will not show up as its looking for them in the wrong place(EG. c:\images not the server folder...). Lots of HTML programs will automatically put the c:\ instead of just the location so when you upload the page the location in the code is wrong. This is why I use NOTEPAD... YOU put in the locations/paths yourself.

<font face="Tahoma" color="lime" size=7>OPTIONS...</font>

This is going to sound confusing :( but it works and is the best way to check things locally.

<font face="Tahoma" color="cyan">
On your PC create the same directory structure as your server where your webpage is.

Create on your PC at home/work a folder on the root (eg c: or d: etc)to store your pages in. Call it Webpage(something that you know..). this is the one to store your files (eg index.htm) This will mirror the one on your server where you store your html files. EG the index.htm

Then in the folder called webpage, create a folder called images or pics or whatever you call your storage folder on the server.. store all your images there..

what you are doing is creating a mirror of the server on your own machine... As long as the structures are the same local and server you can view pages with images without changing HTML code from server to local.</font>
