I was wondering how do I visit "news.alt.groups" with my pc I did it easily on webtv, but I can't be able to find them with pc... I did try my outlook express, but it only had one railroad group that never can come up. is there other ways to visit alt groups?

Check on your ISP's web site to find out the news server. It's probably like the mail server only "news" instead of "mail."
I use Netscape and it has a built in news reader - you probably have some news software on your machine.
It's all prety straight forward. If this doesn't help, just let us know.

Esppe, I use outlook Express for my mail and news. As Charlie said, substitute news for mail in the accounts setting.
Depending on your ISP, you may find some, all or next to none of the news groups that webTV had. Like cable TV, the more your ISP pays for a news feed, the more newsgroups available. After setting up your news server details the first thing required is to download the news server's list of groups.

My isp is msn, a special version just for my compaq... "compaq.net powered by msn" http://www.trainboard.com/eek.gif it looks just like msn, only with special compaq features. Any whoo, I go to my outlook express-5, it has a button just for news groups, I click it on and it asks me what I want, (a search for groups) I put in "model railroad" ...nothing... I put in "railroad" I get one, "alt.railroad" I say OK and go there, I get a "cannot connect to group server" so am I doing something wrong? are there web sites with links to alt groups?

That's the problem. You have to tell it the server in the preferences. Go into the help or preferences and find where it askes you for the news server. That would be where you would have to put it.
Contact your dial up provider and ask them what the mail server is.
For example, mine is news.nbnet.nb.ca - Yours will be news.something.com or whatever. At any rate, you'll have to enter that for it to work.

my news server is news.compaq.net, I can't find "preferences", I found "syncronization" and a few other ones that all give me errors. It's hopeless, my info, (I believe) is allready entered,
I have Windows ME, and Outlook Express-5

Espee, I use Outlook Express as well.
Look under Tools > Accounts > Properties > News > Server. Your details should be there. Adjust accordingly.
If you are still having problems, check with your servers homepage for special settings - there should be an area with all those types of things available to you.

If you have a news server address at your ISP you can use the following Free News Reader. I use it all the time instead of thru the browser's news reader. It downloads and reads all news groups.

Also, you can use SB News. It is at http://www.sb-software.com and it will download the pics for you. Excellent tool for receiving train pictures from newsgroups!

I give up! http://www.trainboard.com/mad.gif My news server is already entered in the appropriate places, I found the "list" of 25 million news groups http://www.trainboard.com/rolleyes.gif "supported" by my news server, yet every one I click on, now gives me a "outlook can't switch to that server" I guess I'll go back to my freeking webtv to go to news groups... http://www.trainboard.com/tongue.gif Why does this have to be so complex? I'm going to call my isp tech support in the morning, Thanks all for the help!:)

Don't give up! It's probably just something small. I would try to help you through it but I do not use Outlook Express.
I'm sure one of these fine gentlemen will help you figure it out.

Okay ...
User name is your ISP dial up name - the part before the @ sign in your ISP e-mail address.
I will assume you are using NS 4.x instead of NS6 ...
Go into Edit>Preferences>Mail & NewsGroups>NewsGroup Servers
and add your news server. Delete any server that does not need to be there.
Go up to "mail server" and make sure you have your right user ID in there.
Try it now and see how it goes.

There's always deja.com My alternative source for reading news.
In Outlook Express, try this:
Tools - accounts - news tab - choose your account and click properties
On the general tab:
news account name can be anything
name can be anything
e-mail address can be anything
the rest doesn't matter
On the server tab:
The name of the news server
that should be all that is required
The other tabs shouldn't matter.
choose one of the millions of groups and say goto
It 'Should' work
Good luck. http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

I have also been following this, and trying to access new servers, to no avail.
I am going to try it on AOL, Matt tells me it is easy on there. Will see how I get on http://www.trainboard.com/rolleyes.gif

As a general rule, there should be a tutorial on your Internet Service Provider's web site and you should be able to get going easily by calling tech support at your ISP.

E-8, I did exactly as you posted above, (Netscape 4.7) it is news.compaq.net (my ISP) and I have the correct name in the email. Then, I clicked: file> subscribe> and waited for it to load, my box never does show any group names, it asks me for an ID,,, I put in my ID and it says "news server responded, access denied"... am I missing a step? how do I get some group names to come up? there is no "go to" button...

Thanks guppyman, I went to deja.com and it is as easy as this place...maybe even easier. I'm not even going to bother with my news server in outlook express, because I have done everything taught me, I keep getting nothing... must be my isp... or my stupidity http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif oh well deja.com is easy!

The quickest thing to do is call support for your ISP. They could probably help you out in 2 minutes.

If your ISP doesn't have a News Server that you can log into, try the following link:
http://www.liszt.com/news/
It allows reading most newsgroups. Don't know if you can post?
There are other Web sites for newsgroup usage..... search for 'newsgroup' on you favorite search engine.
