View Full Version : Scrolling photographs?

Alan
June 16th, 2000, 01:48 PM
It has been suggested that I put a photo of a full 5-unit set of my N scale spine cars on my web site, but I pointed out that this would make the photo VERY small, to get the length in.

Son Matt then suggested 'why don't you make the picture scroll across the screen' !!

As I have no idea how to do this, or if it can be done, anyone have the solution? (in terms I can understand, please http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

Just put it up the size that you want. The scroll bar will appear at the bottom of the browser screen allowing the viewer to scroll along the photo and see the whole thing. I always try to consider those who use 640x480 to view my pages, but that isn't always possible. The scroll bar takes care of that.

Of course, you could always make the photo vertical and they could scroll down to see it... :)

Thanks, Roger. That would be one way to do it, but I would not want viewers to have to scroll the whole page, so I suppose I could put a link to a seperate page with the picture on it, so that could be scrolled.

What I would really like, is for the picture to scroll across the page all by itself! (Like scrolling text does).

Any clever webmasters out there?

A good image animator might achieve the desired effect. http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

put a thumbnail size on the page and they can click on that to open a larger image up...

nothing worse than waiting for a 4 screen image to open...

or a series of images setup in a table to make them look like they are one image...?

people on webtv, (millions) don't have a horizontal scroll, it would show up on screen OK but small..(?)
you could have a normal screen width shot, and make a "map" out of it .. thumbnails of a perticular section... I have been waiting for an excuse to make a "map"

Thanks for the 'map' idea, Espee, think I will try that and see how it looks. The trouble with trying to photograph 5-unit sets, is that they are L O N G !

http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif I have done it http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

http://www.trainboard.com/frown.gif But when I put the html for the animation on here, it actually animates part of the text, so I cannot show the code for others who may be interested http://www.trainboard.com/confused.gif

Charlie, can the html be turned off for a post, so I can show the html for the scrolling photo?

Meanwhile, anyone who would like the code, feel free to email me. http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

Only for a forum Alan. Would it be easier to turn HTML off in this forum?

Charlie, would there be a downside to turning off the html? Would that affect signatures, etc? Also, if a website url is posted it would not show as a hyperlink, right? Although it could be copied and pasted, I suppose.

It was just a thought, I have had one request already, and emailed the code.

I don't think it will be an on-going problem, but would have been helpful in this instance to have been able to post the code.

I think turning off the HTML would be self defeating. The Club car is for Web developement purposes.

I agree, Gary. My original thought that html could maybe be turned off for a particular post, or topic. But I am not in favour of turning it off for this forum - especially this one!!

Well, I thought that maybe it would help in this forum to turn HTML off so that examples could be displayed in help situations without doing anything so that people can see the code.

An interesting thought, Charlie, one that didn't occur to me. But, then, there's no secrets out there http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif
I didn't quite grasp what Alan may be attempting to do until a few moments ago. Alan, are you trying to get the picture to automatically scroll across the page? If so, that could be done with an animated gif but, depending on the size and the number of steps, could be a large file.

Alan;

Here's an interesting way to use frames to do something like that while allowing the user to view the portion they like. I think this would be a neat idea for someone to use on a train related site: http://www.confederationbridge.com/en/accueil/index.htm

Thanks for asking the question and the suggestions. I may have use for these techniques in the future.

How appropriate one of the examples is the Confederation Bridge web site. I live 20 minutes from "the" bridge and use it fairly often to travel to the mainland. It is an incredible feat of engineering and has been a godsend for travel to and from PEI.
