W.C wants to sell its shares in new zealands tranz rail system . along with a nz shareholder 38 % of the shares will be for sale for $ 168 million . tranzrail wanted to sell its auckland suburban tracks to the council for $ 120 million !!
there is support for the government to buy the whole system back . i think this would be a good idea providing it kept the track only , and made it open access , and resell the trains and operations to private operaters . siemens , a french company ,and stage coach are all interested .
interesting that these companies think they can make a go of operations that W.C can't .
i think with good management they will succeed .the important thing is to ensure the tracks stay , and really only the government or regional councils can do that . however politics will get in the way , with a right wing parties transport spokesperson ( who wouldnt know what a train was if it run them over ) suggesting ripping up the tracks , and putting more roads in .
to any wealthy railfans out there , a couple of very scenic lines are up for sale for usd $ 1 million and usd$4 million respectively .
