I have posted these pics on various forums, but never this one. Below are pictures of my work on the restoration on NKP caboose 471. It was built in 1962, and was in the last order of cabooses for the NKP. The N&W used this caboose for many years and at some point in the late 80s or early 90s, it was leased to the W&LE where it was used in coal service. Once the lease ended, the caboose was returned to NS. At this time, it was the last NKP caboose on the system, and it was given to the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum (HVRM). There it sat for a couple of years, At one point it was repainted, but that was about it, until this year.

I started working on this caboose on August 21 of this year.

The first day out was an overview of what needed to be done. It's in pretty good shape, so we started off by power washing the roof. Pretty straight forward job.

The goal is to return the caboose to its as delivered state. The first step is to remove any add ons, such as these lights that N&W added.

Here is an inside shot of one of the holes after welding and grinding.

The reason for the rotton plywood. A 1/2" tall by 14" hole under the window. I have already filled in some of the hole.

Getting ready to remove this piece of wood, its in pretty bad shape.

Here I am cleaning up around the window. At one point these windows were plated over, so there is some left over welds that are being taken off. I am also cleaning up my earlier weld on the window gap.

That's it for now.
