One hundred thirty two years ago today, California Governer Leland Stanford and Doctor Thomas C. Durant of New York stood in an otherwise unremarkable area of Utah. As they raised their hammers, they turned to look at the telegraph operator, who tapped three dots and simply said, "O.K." Immediately, church bells and fire gongs rang and cannons were fired from coast to coast. Impromptu parades and fireworks filled the day and night all across the land. For a truly major feat had just been accomplished: the completion of the Pacific Railroad. Truly a great day in American History.
