Hot Metal Cars

Does anyone know of a source of information for hot metal cars used in blast furnaces? Photographs, plans, etc. (Similar to the ones Walthers make in HO).

I believe they can be called bottle cars or flask cars, also.

i know that MR ran an article in the past few years, but I dont remember how long ago. I think it was written by Joe Slanser (spelling). He has a very extensive steel industry on his layout. If you are in the Ohio area its worth the visit.....Mike http://www.harrythecat.com/graphics/k/train3.gif

I did a search over at http://index.mrmag.com/ and found an article by Dean Freytag in the November 1994 Railroad Model Craftsman titled "Modeling a bottle car to carry molten steel." I don't know if this is scratchbuilt or based on an existing model (the Walther's model wasn't released until March '96). Also, check various articles by Bernard Kempinski to see if he is including this operation in his steel mill and how he's modeling it (N Scale, March/April and May/June '98; Railmodel Journal, October 2000).

Hey Alan,

Why don't you ask an easy question?? I read your post when you first put it up and some looking around. Last night I couldn't sleep soooo went on a hunt. I tried the following Key words:

Hot Metal Car
Torpedo Car
Metal Transfer Car
Ladle ----- not what you want
Submarine Car

I tried these with variations of rail, RR and other words. After about three hours, the light bulb lit up http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif. I belong to an eGroup list about Steel Works Trains. I posted a message to that group and am waiting for a reply. We may or may not get lucky.

Thanks for taking the trouble, Jim http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif But I found that these cars are now being produced by Peachcreek Models (http://www.members.aol.com/peachcreek)so I may not be doing them now.

I also did some searches on Google, and found a number of photos. There are many variations on these cars, they seem to change from mill to mill http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif
