Greetings;
I am finally posting a few pictures of my area. There are not many places to watch trains here - much different than my native Kansas. But, it is a beautiful area and I apologize that a couple of these pictures are not train related but I think you will enjoy them. I took them just this afternoon just so you all could see them. Y'all come visit now.
Charlie
---------------
This is just a couple of blocks from where I live and is the only place in my city where train tracks are visible. Everything on the right hand side of the picture is in Maine U.S.A. and everything in the left side and in the background, including the brick building, is in New Brunswick Canada. The railroad tracks on the right are in the U.S. The bridge goes between the US and Canada. The left side of the bridge is in Canada and the right side in the U.S. The railroad activity on the U.S. side is Guilford and on the Canadian side it is Southern New Brunswick Rail - and they have beautiful trains. Some mornings before I go to work when I drive by, there is a short train on the bridge with half of it in Canada and half in the U.S. Walking across this bridge would land you in jail. http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif
http://www.trainboard.com/userphotos/e-8/bridge.jpg
These next 2 pictures are not railroad related. There just isn't enough rail activity to photograph around here.
This is the eastern-most point in the United States - West Quoddy Head in Lubec, Maine. There are two lighthouses in Lubec and this is near me. The other one is the Channel Lighthouse and it is out in the water. It's too far to get a good pic with my camera but I will get one sometime. This one is quite nice and there are a number of trails to hike in this area.
http://www.trainboard.com/userphotos/e-8/westquod.jpg
About 10 minutes East is the East Quoddy Head Lighthouse. This is on the Eastern side of Campobello Island, New Brunswick Canada. Campobello Island is a small but beautiful island that is accessible from a bridge with Lubec, Maine and only by ferry from Canadian points, including Deer Island, and LeTeete, New Brunswick. About 9 miles from this point is where President Franklin Roosevelt had his "cottage" (30+ rooms) and where he contracted polio.
You can only get to this lighthouse at low tide (we have the highest tides in the world) because you have to climb up and down two ladders attached to rocks and go across ground that is under water at medium and high tide. The tides rise 5 feet per hour so you don't want to get caught over there if you don't understand the tides! I fell down once getting over there to get the shot and have a sore ankle but it was worth it. You have to walk across rocks and a lot of slick seaweed to get there.
http://www.trainboard.com/userphotos/e-8/eastquod.jpg
It is already fall here but not too soon to plan a Downeast Maine - Atlantic Canada vacation for next Spring!
Sorry for a couple of non-train pictures but I thought you would enjoy. http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

Great pictures EH! I particularly like the light house ones as I intend to build a lighthouse on the M.A.T. at the port of Tayside. Thanks for sharing these with us.
Here is the model I made in N scale based on one of your pictures.

Thanks for sharing Charlie. It's fun to see the neck of the woods where one of our own lives. Interesting about the island that FDR lived on. Is it a historical site that you can visit?
I'll bet that sea air smells good! I miss that.

Charlie, If you haven't already seen it, get a copy of Oct. 2000 Railfan magazine. Great article with fanning directions to some super sites along the Maine/New Brunswick border, Canadian National.
I relocated from the CA desert (read Tehachapi and Cajon) a few years ago to the Oregon coast. Will be glad to trade lighthouse (or covered bridge) photos with you! Railfanning isn't everything (I know, it's the ONLY thing.) http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

fitz, thank you for that tip. I will make sure I get that magazine. We have a magazine store here that should have a copy of that.
Patrick, you can tour the FDR cottage - it is free and there is a visitor's center. It is just one mile into Canada (Campobello Island, New Brunswick) from the U.S. Everything inside is just as it was during the 1930's. It is very interesting to see. It is called a "cottage" but with 30+ rooms it is bigger than any house I will ever live in. There are servants quarters, guest rooms, and all of that in a 3 story building.
A fun thing to do is to drive across the bridge to Campobello Island and from there take a commercial ferry to Deer Island - I think it costs $9 Canadian for a car. It's about a 15 minute drive across Deer Island to the other side where you can get a larger free government operated ferry that takes you to near St. George, New Brunswick. There, you can see a BEAUTIFUL gorge that is something that I could just stand and look at for hours. There are a lot of day trip things to see and do around this area and I will post more pictures on another web site soon. http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif
This is all close to the large city of St. John, New Brunswick and not more than 2 hours from Bangor, Maine. A great place to spend a vacation.

I'm finally catching up!
Great shots, Charlie. I too have a quasi-fascination with lighthouses. I guess it's the solitude and sheer audacity to stand out against the elements. The photos of lighthouses being hit by massive waves during storms are spectacular.
Thanks for sharing.

It has come to my attention just today that the lighthouse on Campobello Island, New Brunswick needs repairs. Saturday, September 30 is "Lighthouse Day" on Campobello Island. Anyone care to join me? I am going to attend.

Charlie, I still have extra copies of those two Railfan mags I referred to, but now that I think about it, you were pulling my leg. Certainly there are book stores out in the sticks. Joke's on me. On the other hand, I will be perfectly happy to send them to you, along with a great local photo of the Yaquina Head or Heceta Head lighthouses here on the Oregon coast. http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

fitz,
I would be interested in that. Sorry that it has taken me so long to respond. I failed to properly check back on this thread! I'll wait until you reply.
Also, this wonderful work that Robin has done has to be seen. I see that Robin edited his earlier post to add the model he made. Robin e-mailed me photos and I was thoroughly impressed that I felt the need to refresh the topic.
That is really great Robin!!!

Charlie, I am truly sorry. I thought for sure you were kidding when you didn't reply. I gave the magazines to a neighborhood kid who likes trains. I will post a lighthouse. Have a brand new computer and have to learn how to use it first!
