Railroad Video's

No doubt many, if not most of us have Railroad Videos. Which, of all your copies do you like the best, and why?

Which producer's video's do you think are the best quality, production, narration, content, etc?

Do you just obtain ones that relate to your particular road/interest, or enjoy a cross-section of those available.

I tend to buy anything BNSF/ATSF/Western Roads, but also enjoy my friend's CSX/NS tapes. My favourite is 'Highball Over Cajon' by Highball Productions, who I think also do the best job of production, narration, etc. The reproduction quality of this tape is quite stunning. I also love ANYTHING on Tehachapi, my favourite place.

We in England have to buy tapes that have been converted to PAL system. Earlier conversions were a bit iffy, but with modern digital productions, there is no loss of quality.

Most of my experience is with Pentrex. I have "Best of the Midwest" Volumes 1 & 2 and "Trains along the Upper Mississippi" Volumes 1 & 2. These tapes are good representations of the action in this part of the the US. I also like "Hot Rails Through The Twin Cities" from Pentrex. As you can tell I lean toward midwest US railroading with emphasis on BNSF and CP. I do have a "Crawford Hill" tape from Iron Horse America that I like also. I really like the production quality of Pentrex. They include maps, a good history of the area and are well narrated.

My favourite video is Forty Years of Nickel Plate Berkshires. Steam steam glorious steam.
For scenery nothing can beat the Galcier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt. A wonderful video.
I have many others but these two stand out.

Tape 1: Flint Sub between Port Huron and Battle Creek .

Tape 2: Holly Sub bewtween Durand and Detroit , Mt.Clemens Detroit to Port Huron .

Tape3: South Bend Sub between Battle Creek and Chicago .

They were shot back in 1994 , real good stuff , great quality , done by a company called Clear Block Productions .

I have aprox. 25-30 videos and there are two that stand above the rest. The first tape is Chicago Odyssey, a two tape set from Green Frog that focuses on the late 60's and 70's. Shot by Emery Gulash, it covers most of the lines runing out of Chicago.

The second tape is The Milwaukee Road(imagine that!) from Pentrex. It is a three tape set that covers the electrification in the early 70's. It explains the power and looks at some of the substations. A real shame that it's still not around. But at least it serves as a testement to times past.
