Diesel Era and CTC Board when I get a chance.

I loved Vintage Rails before it was discontinued. I hear it is coming back? I don't live near a train store anymore so I can't go leaf through them and buy the ones I want http://www.trainboard.com/frown.gif

Thanks, but I am sorry that no-one has mentioned N Scale magazine, as I have just taken out a subscription, to give it a try.
(And as they are going to mention my N Scale spine cars!)

I enjoy Trains, as this keeps us up to date with what is happening on the US rails, with splendid photographs, and informative articles. I do have a look at Model Railroader, as my son Matt (sticky monk) buys it. But it is hard to find articles amongst all that advertising!

I think I get too many each month!

Get TRAINS, RAILFAN & RAILROAD and RAILPACE for the railroad stories and information.

Get RAILROAD MODEL, RAILMODEL JOURNAL, MODEL RAILROADING, MODEL RAILROADER, MAINLINE and
best of all 'N-Scale'. These are for modeling ideas and the advertisements.
Have most issues dating back to 1993.

TRAINS (since 1995)
The Milwaukee Railroader (since 1998)
Garden Railways (since 1999)

Thinking about starting up with N Scale magazine though, since that's one of the scale I model in. Can anyone tell me a bit more about it? Thanks for the help!

N Scale mag. is a Hundman publication, and is published bi-monthly. Good to have a mag. that is not crammed with ads. and the ones that are there are at the front and back, so do not interfere with the content, and all ads. are for N scale http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

I get CTC Board and Diesel Era with any regularity. Used to get Pacific Rail News before it disappeared - hopefully it will be back soon. Trains when it has something particular in it.
Model Railroader and Model Railroad Craftsman if they have something of interest, though MR's ads do nark me greatly. Also Rail Model Journal when I can get it.
N Scale? Haven't got one in a while after they went off song. I believe it may have gotten back on track again but I haven't looked of late. The early issues were great, and it really does fill a niche in the N Scale world. Having the ads front and rear only was a big plus in their favour.

I have subscribed to 'Model Railroader' since 1981 and 'Narrow Gauge & Shortline Gazette' since 1985.
Model Railroader seems to be the 'standard' that has lots of information for me about new products, how to paint, electrical pointers and troubleshooting. The NG&SG is a wonderful publication for those of us in narrow gauge modeling. It always contains great plans for scratch building various steam locomotives. I prefer those that are used on logging operations because they can be modeled to look really funky, as were the prototypes. I have found that N-scale track works well for HOn30 and HO guage track works well for Sn3.

Well, let's see - subscribe to Model Railroader 'cause it covers all aspects of the hobby, Trains for both the current news and historical/informational articles, buy RMC (usually) just 'cause, although I'm tailing off as I usually don't find much anymore, and buy N Scale because it's all about N scale, although the quality seems spotty at times.

I've read Trains and RMC since 1973, and Model Railroader since 1974. I've even read
R&R since Issue 1. Did write Shortlines for
RailNews until shortly before Pentrex shut it
down (can you please tell me how killing a magazine & selling the pieces to Kalmbach
[the Trains folks] saves it?).
Overall, my favorites are the Kalmbach
publications, including Great Model Railroads
and Track Planning that come out each year.
I browse thru the others at the hobby shop, and if I find an interesting article, I buy that magazine.

There's a great on-line train magazine. It comes out every single day! It is full of interesting pieces written by people from all over the world and covers all facets of railroading. Any person interested in trains is a columnist if they want to be and there is no word count limit on the articles they write or the number of pictures that go with. Best of all, this publication is FREE!

Surely everything that helps and encourages young model railroaders must be good for the future of the hobby, but MR seems to think otherwise.

They did move it to the MR Website. However, ModelRailroader has not given either of the "Hosts/Moderaters" good computer access. I E Mail one of them, and he said that I made a good point about the subject we were speaking of, but he could not do anything as MR wouldn't give them a Puter to work on.

I liked CTC Board and Pacific rail news PTJ. Used to subscribe to them and Trains. But now I boycott Trains because of the poor journalism they use. When they did their article a year or so ago. They stated that the BN bought the Frisco. When I wrote and stated that they were wrong they stated that sure it was a merger but everbody knows the BN bought them out so thats the way they wrote the article. I think if they want to be known as a good reliable publication you have to use facts not whatever the author decides sounds good. So now then, all thats seems left for me to read is CTC Board.

Yup, Canada is blessed with good publications.

CRM is good, needs alittle improvement, but they do a great job albeit. It is starting to run alittle behind schedule too. They also have some legal battles going on as to using photos w/o consent from the photographer.

Branchline is for the prototype. It is my favourite mag. other than BC Rail SIG's Carriboo! Branchline is done by Bystow, who publishes the Track Side Guide. It feutures news on rosters, finacial, and other super specific stuff. For 3.75, I can't complain!!!!! It is awsome!

Then there is the CN, BCR, and CP Sig, they all do a good and unique job.

Thought I'd throw in another good model railroad reference. It's not a magazine but Railroad Model Craftsman magazine has been using similiar articles the past few months.
It's 'Bridge and Trestle Handbook', put out by Carstens. I found it great for bridge and fly-over designs.
When I need to span a 7' upper level walk under area, I went to the book and found the perfect bridge. The 'Quebec Bridge,St. Lawrence River'. Took me three months to scratch build. I have it double tracked and with working warning lights.

I'm not a cheerleader for Kalmbach but I just bought my first issue of Classic Trains and enjoyed it very much.

I recently let my subscription to the monthly Trains lapse but I hit the TRAINS Newswire site each week. (The site is usually updated each Wednesday.)

I thumb through MRR, RMC, Diesel Era, and N Scale at newsstands but only bring 'em home if there's an article that looks interesting.

I guess that makes me a browser, not a subscriber; I get the N-Trak newsletter, while considering reviving my lapsed NMRA membership. (I don't quite comprehend apparent friction between NMRA and N-Trak.)

Magazines and books, like minds, work better when they're open.

Had PTJ starting with issue #1 until they folded it into Pacific News.
Have had Trains for many years, but think it's becoming just one big "ad" with some train stuff thrown in to justify the name.
Tried the new "classic trains" - a clone of "Trains" itself.
Find most of the info nowdays on the internet boards.
Read the Shasta Rail Group pubs to pick up what I miss. IMHO "Flimsies Northwest" and "SP Review" are their best rags. Flimsies West is OK, and "The Overland" has a way to go. Haven't seen "BNSF Review" yet, also waiting for their "Western Railfan" new color mag.

I like MRR and RMC. I really liked Vintage Rails, for the fiction and first hand accounts. Classic Trains has great pics, but is a big disappointment to me, story wise. Instead, I went to ebay and bought 125 or so issues of Railroad Magazine. I made sure I didn't go past 1960, as I am a steam era fan. These mags are a gold mine of fiction, first hand accounts, and tutorials on steam era, early diesel, and traction equipment. I've been learning about different parts and appliances on steam lokies, plus the fiction is a mother lode of common practices and methods, and good morals and behaviour. Too bad they were printed on pulp paper!

I subscribe to Model Railroader, Model Railroading, and Garden Railways. I also read RMC, Trains and Classic Toy Trains on a regular basis.

Each and every one of these magazines has been stored away for future reference. I've been fortunate to acquire back issues for many mags I didn't have, including some neat issues of Model Trains magazine, which was published by Kalmbach in the '50s. I still don't think my wife realizes how many magazines I've picked up in the last ten years! http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

I don't really have any complaints about these magazines, but I too miss Rail News. Their articles seemed to appeal to me more than those in Trains. Of course, there's never enough about the SP&S!

I've subscribed to MR since 1961, I like it for the stories about other pikes, the product reviews (engs on pulling power) (kits on ease of assembly), RMC since 1967 (recently I question why), GR since 1995 because it is (I think) the best on outdoor rr's, Trains, Railpace, Railfan, and The Short Line for over 20 yrs or more for railfanning reasons. I always take a stack of old MR & GR with me on vacation for relaxing moments.

I used to pick up Extra 2200 South when my local hobby shop had it, but always hesitated from subscribing since it's schedule was inconsistent at best for a while. (They may have gotten better, but I can't gauge since my Hobby Shop has disappeared  ). I like CTC board, Trains, and Railroad/Railfan, etc. I used to be able to thumb through them at the Great Train Store in a couple of minutes and be totally satisfied without buying them: they were not "reference quality" to me [read: not worth the money, time, and space to buy and store them IMHO]

As far as Modeling, as I said I do subscribe to N Scale. I have saved all of my back issues. The magazine is not crammed with ads, and at least the ads are all relevant to the scale featured (N). I like to keep my back issues for modeling references; although the current issue may have a construction article on scratchbuilding a certain type of building, I may not really be interested in that or ready to undertake that task YET; when the time does come, I can refer to the techniques listed. I have not had the opportunity to sample the new N Scale Railroading magazine, but most of the reviews have been excellent. I used to subscribe to Model Railroader, but found the amount of ads (especially scales way too large  ) bothersome. Also, since a vast amount of the magazine was geared towards other scales and beginners, I lost interest. (Yes, I know you can learn techniques, etc. from other scale articles, but I'd rather stick with my own). I think Model Railroading is a good magazine too, devoid of most of the multi-page ads that you see in MR and it seems geared more to an advance modeler. However, most modeling depicted is HO scale. I do still buy it occasionally for the reference pics & articles [the Nov/Dec '00 issue had articles on Southern/NS GP30's, kitbashing the same, plus an article/pics on EMD GP40's.]

That's my two cents worth. smile.gif

For you magazine freaks, I would like to make a recommendation that I thought I would "unsubscribe" to, and instead, look forward to it. In www.trains.com (http://www.trains.com) you can subscribe to their on line magazine, it just sends you back to their site with links, but I like the convenience of scrolling and going to what I am interested it. The calibre of articles is excellent. One article I have already recommended for example out of this issue is the WC/CN merger, but another one is about the food on past passenger trains, and at the the end of the article is some great recipes from famous food service trains from days gone by. When you consider this on line magazine is free, I would recommend it to you.

Diesel Era
Extra 2200 South
CTC Board
Branchline
Flimsies West
The Overland
Green and Silver Review

I tend to shy away from the big mags anymore, too many ads, I want to read what I read, not be innondated with advertising.

Model Railroader, Trains, N Scale. I have been reading MR and Trains since the early 1950's and N Scale since it got on its feet. ;)

I kept a few Model Railroaders. I think from along about 1939 to 1997 when I finally gave up on them. Railroad Model Craftsman I still subscribe to but by the time the subscription runs out, I hope to have the layout running so wont need it any more. I'll be running all day long! My wife asks "How could you stand to just run trains all day?" No point in trying to explain to her. :D

MR every month. I can't help it. All those pretty pictures and I am really liking what Koester is doing these days - his column is the first thing I read.

Trains, RMC and Railmodel Journal when there is an article of interest.

But by far the BEST magazine is 'the SOO' (the Soo Line Historical and Technical Society quarterly magazine) If you are not a member of an historical society I can't say how great a source of information the historical society publications are. Even if you freelance I'm sure your freelancing is at least loosely based on some real railroad somewhere - if they have a historical society - join it! :D

Dave,
I am puzzled with your unique selection of model railroad magazine selection. Perhaps we should be turning to you as an expert on how to model grass, design a parking lot, or creating our "link" on the model layout. LOL!!!

I get TRAINS and Model Railroader, by subscription. I also will pick up a Railfan and Railroad and an RMC, on occassion. I have been thinking of dropping Model Railroader in favor of RMC, but MR's Lou Sassi just did a photo shoot of my club's layout. ;) So I am thinking of waiting until I get that issue then maybe drop it.

As for coverage of my favorite road. It would have to be the N&WHS publication The Arrow.

I buy Model Railroader and Trains magazine and i borrow all of GATS magazines when he lets me lol. Actually the price of MR and Trains has doubled in the past 2 years so i'm considering dropping Trains especially when i can read there online mag for free. One thing though is a claim a tax deduction for trains magazine because I consider it as industry information so I can use it as reference material hehehe
