VIA is purchasing seven high-speed General Motors locomotives to complement its current locomotive fleet, an investment of up to $25 million. The new GM F59PHI locomotives will replace the seven LRC locomotives currently in use and maintain VIA's capacity to operate high-speed trains.

The new locomotives will have a typical operating speed of 100mph. Their acceleration/deceleration capabilities are sufficient to maintain or improve VIA's current trip times. In addition, the locomotives comply with current Environmental Protection Agency engine emissions and to CN track force requirements as well as meet current Canadian regulations.

The F59PHI locomotive is reliable and capable of immediate interface with VIA's facility servicing systems. Its state-of-the-art systems and subsystems are equipped with health monitoring (can detect weakening of equipment), event recording and diagnostics.

Operators will benefit from a climate-controlled cab separated from the main locomotive structure to minimize noise and vibrations, and a modern operator's console design with the provision for cab signalling.

VIA's current locomotive fleet is as follows:

57 GPA30 (F40s-Dane Note) locomotives operating in the Corridor and Transcontinental services (built by GM in the mid-1980s - 3 of these require accident repair);
7 GPA418 (FP9s-Dane Note) locomotives operating in Northern Quebec and Northern Manitoba (built by GM in the early 1950s);
7 100mph (Garbage-Dane Note) locomotives (LRC) manufactured by MLW.
This purchase marks the beginning of VIA's locomotive replacement program, which will add up to 21 new high-speed locomotives for use in the Quebec City/Windsor corridor.
