Very new here. Like a brand spanking new J rolling out of Roanoke's shops. So, where are the N&W fans? Anyone from southeastern Pa.?

Jeff,
Welcome to Trainboard, I hope you find trainboard an interesting site and make it your home.

We do have some active members that i'm sure wil appreciate another N W fan.

Take a look around the other forums as we average 30-50 active topics a day.

Once again welcome to Trainboard if you require any advice feel free to contact me via email.

Welcome to the TrainBoard family Jeff. Feel free to come tell us about your experiences and post photos of any engines you may have. Tell us about what you drive. I'm an old steam fan, but the younger set cater to diesels, so everybody is happy here.

Hi Jeff, and welcome! I think there are some N&W fans lurking around... I like (liked? tongue.gif ) the N&W, but never saw much in my neck of the woods (N.C.) until after the merger with Southern, then some slowly drifted in, mostly GP30's/35's/40's... I thought it was a real "find" to catch the ex-NKP units, since I was not accustomed to any low nosed units on the Southern :D

Mabe now that you have "placed the call" for N&W fans, they'll come out! (It is vacation season though.... they may be off railfanning :D )

Hi Jeff,
Welcome to the TrainBoard. I model the N&W and SCL (with a dash of NS and CSX) in N scale.

Ooops, I cut off my post. Anyway, I'm a big fan of the N&W. I spent most of my pre-teen and teenage years (mid 70s to early 80s)trackside watching high hoods roll through Petersburg, VA. I usually make a pilgrimage from Norfolk to Roanoke when I am back home but it just isn't the same without seeing Pevlar Blue SD45s pulling long strings of H11s or a high hood C630 working Lamberts Point.
Take Care.

Finally some N&W fans. Maybe we should get our own different board. :D Anyway, I grew up in the heart of N&W country in Portsmouth, Ohio. It was a long time before I realized that locomotives could be painted other colors than black. :D

I model the 70's up until the merger and I belong to the N&WHS. The N&W Historical Society has a good email board/list at NWHS.org But will talk N&W talk anytime anywhere.

Thanks for the welcome fellow N&W/NS peoples..I spent a lot of time with NS steam excursions in the 80's. Of course 611 is my favorite. I also model the N&W circa 1956-57. Trying to model Roanoke area or Cincinatti area. Tough call. I like diesels too, but, steam holds my attention a little more. But, I can say I do love those high hoods. I drive a 1999 Peterbilt 379 with a Cat C-12 engine (450 H.P.)To answer that question, I haul gasoline, diesel, fuel oil and lube oil. I live outside of Philly and NS has taken over! Glad to finally see the Horse up here.

HELP! I need a NS hotspot that would be 100-150 miles in any direction from New York City. Anyone know a place? It doesn't have to be a day's drive. An over-nighter there would bee fine too.
thanks for the help.

Hi Jeff, nice to see more N&W nuts here . :D I model the late 40s early 50s steem era. Have a small arround the room layout at the present, but am thinking of redoing a lot of it. Another project I'm working on is the cosmetic restoration of pacific # 578 at the Ohio Railway Museum. Just finished the lettering today, but still have some cab interior and window work to do. I'll have pics soon, I hope........Mike

JohnyTrains,

Harrisburg and the railfan bridge as the ex-pennsy Rockville bridge, would make a good trip for you. Probably a long drive for one day, but why don't you make it an overnighter.

Good Call Ajy6b, Enola Yard is there, NS is dumping millions to upgrade it. Plus the Rockville bridge! Lot's of action there, Route 322 going west sits right at the end of the bridge. Great place to see action!

Jeff, here is a photo of a coal train and another of a string of engines going over the Rockvill bridge you mentioned. These are from a good buddy that let me post them for you to give an idea of one railfanning site of the bridge. You can tell which one is early morning and which is late evening. I think both are excellent shots.

Great photos! But, I have to say, although those high hooded horses are nice. Nothing compares to a high steppin' J-Class on an all stainless steel consist of the "Tennessean." But, I really do like those Rockville photos, it's always been a great spot to watch trains.

I have to agree with Jeff. The J will always be my true first love. Every time I think of it, I wipe a cinder from my eye.

Johnny Trains,

Welp if your looking for a good train spot, here is one of the best ( At least to me! ) he he. Silve Creek NY. Is great with CXS and NS back to back ! On a good day you can see every thing from the 3:30 AM and 6:30 AM Amtrak on the CXS to the NS hot shots on there way into and out of Buffalo NY. The CXS has a North control siding in Silver Creek and NS has the end of a passing siding right there were we line up to photo shoot both. The best part is you can sit in your car and face The CXS, step out side and turn 180 and right behind you is the NS. Many Railfan come from all over to Silver Creek. Some times in a week end you'll be alone but in most cases you'll meat other rail fans from neat places as far away as Calf. And Canada. Its quite the place. I have been going there sense I was in 7th grade hhmmmm some 17 years now! If you plan oncoming down please let me know and I'll meat you there! Then just a short jog down the road is a place I live called Dunkirk. CXS has a small yard here to service a few local industries and a power plant. But on Monday threw Friday in the morning there is almost always some yard action, and even on some week ends. The NS basically winds its way threw Dunkirk like a snake and some of its curves here in the city are kind of neat. But Silver Creek is the place to be! My family and speed many a summer nights there!

Here is a url that will show you a bit of Silver Creek : http://phantom.150m.com/ns/railfaning/Silvercreek/www/
