First off, thanks again guys for the welcome. What I`m asking is:a black steam loco is usually considered a thing of beauty( and I would agree)so why are black NS diesels considered ugly? I like the other RR`s paint schemes too but doesn`t basic black have a certain appeal as well?In my experience on the `net so far, hardly anyone has anything good to say about NS black(or NS itself for that matter!)

NS, Black, etc: 1st, welcome aboard. I've only been onboard a short time myself but so far it's been an interesting time. I think black steam engs are so widely accepted because, like automobiles when they first came out, black was the basic color for all- there wasn't much to choose from color wise. As for the NS (Nazi Southern)in general, my friends & co-workers don't care for their attitude and "strong arm" tactics. Of all the other railroads in N America, when it comes to negative things to say about a rr, the NS is head & shoulders above the rest!

ever sit in a black car for 12 hours an 102 degree heat with the windows down and no breeze?a lot like a oven huh?the other railroads with brighter colored engines have air on almost all of their fleet, but on the ns air conditioning is for the computers on the engine not its crew.
i really don't think the color is the reason that everyone hates the ns its the attitude of the management.i have always found it funny that they call themselves america's most admired railroad when nobody who works for them can say anything good about them.sounds like the upper management has a bit of a ego trip going to me.

O.K.guys,all your comments made sense. As the current owner of a black vehicle,I should have realized the importance of AC in a black
loco.About all I see anymore on NS are the GE
widecabs.Don`t they all(the standard cab Dash
9`s too)have AC?Anyway,my affinity for NS has
little to do with management. As a kid I grew up watching both SOU & N&W.You out there who work for NS or any other RR have my respect.
As regards CSX,they`re OK too.Being a native
of Kentucky coal country,I confess to a soft
spot for the good `ol L&N as well.Take care!

Recently visited Virginia loved those big black loco's. Another thrill was operating Vincent Mariner's very extensive HO layout which has lots of big Black Deisels bearing that NS logo
