Ok Everyone:

With all the talk regarding the upcoming release of the new Atlas GP38 High Hood model, I thought I would post this info that I put together several years ago showing the variations in the air filters used on the N&W and Southern GP38, GP38AC and GP38-2 fleets. As you can see, there are a number of variations and it is vital with the SOU locos that good photos of a specific unit are used in order to model it correctly. It is also necessary to know when such photos were taken if you are trying to model a
certain time frame, since some units were modified as time went on. While there are many detail differences on individual units, the listing below shows the major body variations with regard to the air filter boxes and dynamic brake hatches.

GP38 Variations

1. SOU -- No Filter Box, tapered dynamics (as delivered).
2. SOU -- Angled Filter Box, cut-off dynamics.
3. SOU -- Square Filter Box, cut-off dynamics.
4. SOU -- No Filter Box, no dynamics (2880-2886 series).
5. SOU -- Angled Filter Box, no dynamics (2880-2886 series retrofits).

These locomotives were originally equipped with a 1700 gallon fuel
tank. Many units later had these tanks replaced by NS with 3000 gallon
tanks from retired N&W and SOU SD35's.

GP38AC Variations

1. NW -- Square Filter Box, tapered dynamics, (4100-4159 series).
2. SOU -- No Filter Box, tapered dynamics (as delivered).
3. SOU -- Square Filter Box, cut-off dynamics.
4. SOU -- Angled Filter Box, cut-off dynamics.

GP38-2 Variations

1. NW (ex-IT) -- Angled Filter Box, no dynamics, corrugated radiator
grilles (low hood).
2. SOU -- No Filter Box, tapered dynamics, wire radiator grilles.
3. SOU -- Square Filter Box, cut-off dynamics, wire radiator grilles.
4. SOU -- Angled Filter Box, cut-off dynamics, wire radiator grilles.
5. SOU -- Square Filter Box, tapered dynamics, mesh radiator grilles.
6. SOU -- Square Filter Box, tapered dynamics, corrugated radiator grilles.
7. SOU -- Angled Filter Box, tapered dynamics, corrugated radiator grilles.

If anyone has any additions to this list, I would be happy to hear them.
