2816 Under Steam Yet?

Hi Everyone, Jan 21st/01, 15:40 Hrs. MST.

I Hear some Little Birdies hopping on My Shoulder Wispering that 2816 May B under steam by the End of March. Can Anyone on the
Coast Confirm this.
I Don't know if I can Afford the Rides
so I Might have to Go to "Fort Brinks" for a
"Friendly Loan". Also while I'm at it. Whats
the Scores on 2850 and 3716. Do they Get
some Shop Service after after 2816 Steams out the Door. Just Interested to Know.

The rumours (from BC Rail employees) is that the 2816 is scheduled to be ready in June. You posted the 2850, but I assume you mean the 2860. The 2860 is going to be out of service for a couple of years, or for good, depending on who you listen to. There is lots of politics involved (the BC provincial government owns it, not the railroad).

The 3716 is going strong and I rode it about a month ago on a Christmas excursion my son was volunteering for - called the "Jingle Bell Express."

It appears that D&H Tender 35508 has been kit bashed for usage with 2816 http://www.trainboard.com/frown.gif but I guess it is better than just rusting away in a yard someplace.

The tender was the first unit to be completed. It has been ready for months and looks great (new paint).

Can anyone help validate which D&H Steam Engine this tender came from. There are conflicting statements being made about this tender and I would like to get the "Historical Fact" based on roster information and I hope the CP Forum can help with this.

I will see if I can look into it, but it will take a week or two as I will be asking around town, and some BC Rail employees. There is one young lad I have become friends with who is one of the hired hands in the steam shop to help maintain and run the steam engines when in for repair. He has probably worked on the tender, if I see him I will ask.

LOL....it doesn't look like that any more, the tender for the 2816. Now it looks brand new.

Well...we have a little controversy going here. According to my Hudson, BC Rail, RDC know it all son that has anything to do with the BC Rail, the tender pictured is not what was restored. It looks way too short. More on this up dating story latter.

From your intrepid reporter.... the tender - according to our bible: The Canadian Trackside Guide 2000 - is from the Royal Hudson 2822. This fast breaking news report has now been laid to rest.

It's Official

The photos on your URLs are indeed of an ex-D&H tender and are related to the restoration of
CPR Hudson 2816.

D&H 35508 is the former tender from Delaware & Hudson 4-6-6-4 Class J Challenger No. 1517,
built by Alco, of Schenectady, N.Y. , in 1940.

This remnant of D&H's steam era was commandeered by Canadian Pacific Railway for their steam
program and refurbished (as shown in photo 35508-03) as CP 35508 -- a canteen or water car, to
assist in operating CPR Hudson 2816 and tender carrying treated water.

The tender will be painted in Canadian Pacific's tuscan-and-black livery with gold striping to
conform with the steam passenger livery being applied to 2816.

Locomotive refurbishment continues apace with a yet-to-be determined completion date. The
refurbished boiler and smokebox will be reattached to 2816's running gear mid-to-late February
after which a minimum 60-working-day time-frame is needed to reassemble the locomotive.
Testing and trial runs follow.

[BC Rail King]

BC Rail also uses an auxillery tender for both the Consolidation, and Royal Hudson when they are on long trips. The 2860 uses another Hudson tender, numbered 2860B, and the 3716 has a modified tank car for oil, and a vanderbuilt tender for water. They are 3716B and C I believe.
