I snapped these pics of a train rolling out of Smiths Falls, Ontario on December 28th, 2000. Can someone explain this paint job? I thought maybe it was an ex-Soo Line with the "SOO" painted over with "CP Rail" (thought the paint shop got lazy), until I scanned the pic and blew up the side (second pic). There are letters under the white paint... "KCS" or maybe "RCS"? Any ideas.

D6, they are not ex-Soo units. If I recall correctly, these are ex-KCS. I do have the info somewhere floating around.
Gary.

Yep, that's what the painted out letters appear to be: KCS= Kansas City Southern?

5415-5421 are all ex KCS, only 5416-5417 remain painted KCS, units have recieved a rebuild and repainted, but some have had nose mounted headlights, and some have not.
5415 has a nose light, 5419 has not, all repainted units are in the CP Rail System paint

LOL - Man, it looks like CPR has given up on repainting locomotives. See my CPR Bandit-izes thread in the Minneapolos, St Paul & Sault Ste. Marie forum.

Is that the ex-UP unit that they left in the UP yellow and gray, but painted "CP Rail" in red letters over the "Union Pacific"? That one actually looks pretty good, in fact someone released a decal kit for it.
If that's not it, can you describe it? Better yet, post the URL?

 What the hell is that? It looks like they used White Out to mark the CP. Did they pay the local grafiti artist mininum wage to paint that? Anyone know where that's at so I can avoid it? Talk about God awful.

Oh my God!! That is a whole mess-o-ugly! It looks like it's been through world war 3.
How on earth did it get like that? Did they just drag it out of some mudhole?
Thanks for the pic... I needed a good laugh! smile.gif

Nope! It's a 5400 series. I believe all but the MK rebuilds ,5490-5499 and 5475-5485 (hump units) will be retired upon the arrival of the new AC4400's ths fall. Sometimes when I go to Work I wonder if CP means "Can't Paint". LOL

Don't worry, You'll never see that unit on the CP again. It was one of 3 former leasing company (???) units sold to CP-5447-5449.
The 5447 had that cheap job, and the maroon primer paint, the 5448 had no Dynamic brakes and is painted in primer grey, and is the only unit left out of the three on CP's roster. The 5449 was origionally an SD45, but it got rebuilt to SD40 standards and was in the grey primer as well. The units had the cheap "CP" and the 5448 or 5449 had cheap lettering. They where not repainted red and just lettered for the St Lawrence and Hudson, the 5447 and 5449 have been sold to NRE, and the 5448 continues to ride, not looking that bad, though.

The CP (ex-KCS) units do make a great model

Try those ex UP units on the CP-5422-5431, I think.
:D The 5448 would be easy, get an undec. old Athearn SD40 w/out Dynamic brakes (Athearn stock # 4409) and spray it primer grey and letter it STL&H and add a bell to the left side of the long hood, somewhere after the first vent, and weather the cab.

It takes less money and decals to model those units, more money for others, and still have a very populated roster smile.gif
