I would appreciate if anyone could post or email me pictures of UP engines of the following types.
SD40-2
SD60M (preferrably 3 window units)
SD50
Dash 9
Among other details I'm trying to check, I want to make sure all these units had the handrails by steps painted white.
Also, my Atlas engines (SD50 and SD60M) have grey hoods (the area on top) while my Kato (SD40-2) has the same area green. Is this correct? Is one wrong and the other right?
Thanks for your help.

Follow this link to John Barnhill's Nor-Cal UP Connection. (http://ncespee.railfan.net/UP/upmain.html) There you will find a large and ever growing collection of UP roster shots. I'm pretty sure all of the models you listed are well represented on his site.

While I don't have a direct answer to this question, I believe that most recent UP repaints use gray paint on top of the short hood. In past years, they were painted dark green. The purpose for that is to reduce glare from the top of the hood, and I assume that they stopped using green to reduce cost (one less color needed in the painting process). Hopefully, someone will have a more detailed answer to the question.

All steps and endrails are painted white on UP units. UP started using gray for the top of the nose in 1992. Both the Kato and Atlas units are correct. Kato's UP SD40-2 represents an earlier paint scheme while the Atlas SD60M and SD50 are the current scheme.

Hey Kev,
Thanks for the plug of my site  I feature many pics of these types. Also I know that Microscale has a decal sheet of UP antiglare panels. It comes with many shapes and both green and gray decals. Happy modeling :D
