Does anyone know what happened to cause the damage to the front porch and hand rail on the engineer's side, just above the coupler pocket?

I didn't notice any damage to the unit Sunday when it went over Tehachapi. Where and when did you see the damage, and did you get a picture of it (the damage). Hopefully someone on the inside may provide the answer here or on Trainorders.

Kevin, how close did you get to 6936? I got real personal with it last Thursday evening in Yermo. I do have photos but I must complete the roll. I also have closeups of the 4 axle trucks.
See anything different in this photo? http://www.phcomputing.com/DD40/dd40f.jpg

I guess I didn't get close enough. I only saw it in motion, and usually when it was close enough I was looking through the viewfinder. The damage in your photo appears to be from some kind of minor front end impact, maybe a grade crossing or switching accident during the trip. Hopefully the steam crew guys will give it a proper repair job when it returns home. Aside from that, she looked and sounded beautiful when she climbed Tehachapi.
