Union Pacific is adding 125 4,400-hp, a.c. traction GE Transportation System locomotives
to its existing fleet of more than 1,000 GE a.c. units. The railroad had taken delivery of 23 of
the units as of May 1, and deliveries will be completed this year. The locomotives will be
assigned to coal trains and other duties requiring high-horsepower technology

Is it just me, or has UP heavily favored GE engines in the last few years? And if so, does anybody know why? From a railfan's perspective (probably not a major concern of UP management), I prefer the looks of EMD engines.

Welcome to TrainBoard, LCSO. Personally I love GE's, they look and sound mean http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif But I also like EMD's, particularly love to hear 4 or 5 SD40-2's working hard, but that is getting scarce. http://www.trainboard.com/frown.gif

We get potloads of AC4400Ws around here- a two-unit lashup runs coal trains to the mines
at Paonia and Somerset, CO, and back. A three-unit lashup, with one midtrain and two at the rear (in DPU mode) move coal trains
east daily towards Denver. Most are in SP
colors, but more are showing up in UP yellow.
Once in a while an SD9043MAC shows up in the
motive power lineup, but mostly it's GEs.

One reason there are more newer GE's the EMD's on the SP(UP) is that when they wanted newer high hp units EMD was busy building the BN Sd60mac's. Also GE can build more units faster than EMD. Quantity not quality.
When SP recieved the new AC4400's they went from drawing stage to delivery in about 10 weeks! That's fast! Plus SP did get an incentive package plus a 15 year warranty.
