I am amazed there are not more posts on this UP board. The BNSF one has loads!

Hello Alan,

Me too! I think UP is a class act, although it seems to have had some problems digesting SP and C&NW.

Generally I like the liveries and I would like to model UP in HO if I ever find time.

Best Wishes

I am also an avid UP fan and flew half way across the world last year to get my first real glimpse. The UP run a very large network that every railroad enthusiast can't ignore.

Another UP fan here. I became interested in n-scale MR in Jan. of this year. My first two engines are n-scale KATO UP SD40-2, early versions. I wish to thank who ever is responsible for the Train Board. I can see A lot of good information for beginners, me, and all the other rail fans.

Welcome Patrick. Good locomotive models to start with - my favourite! Hope you enjoy N scale, lots of help on these boards if you need it :)

Thanks Patrick... We aim to please! Charlie (E-8) and myself have put in a few hard weeks of work to bring this together.... and there is much more work to be done. We are especially glad that it is going so well.. and to see that there was an obvious need for such a listing of forums.
I have always had a love for trains... from the time I was about 5 years old I can remember the lights of trains shining in my bedroom window.. and I would watch their approach until they turned and the night once again went dark.
Again... Thanks for the kind words... it makes it all worthwhile!
Scott

Not a big slobbering UP fan, but I like the road above all the big Class 1s.
First time I ever saw trains in action up
close & personal was the UP's Encampment Branch local working the sawmill in Saratoga, WY, using an Alco RSC2 for power. It would head back to Walcott Jct and the UP
mainline with the caboose anywhere in the train (except in front of the locomotive http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif )
We met the City of LA several times in Rawlins to meet & see off relatives, and the
jetlike roar of the Big Blows could be heard for miles!
Uncle Pete did a spotty job absorbing the
C&NW and SP, but I think he's getting back on
track now. Hate to see the WP, MP, DRGW, CNW\
and SP go, but I guess that's progress.
I can't wait to get back up to Wyoming & watch UP do what it does best- roll freight on the Overland Route at speed!

Frisco Bob, your mention of the big blows brings back thoughts when we visited Cajon pass in 1998. The sight and sound of one storming up to Blue Cut must have been awesome!!

Loves Armor Yellow and Harbor Mist Gray.......also the fact UP still runs Steam even when NS has 2 stored.

I've been a UP fan since 1964 when I took it
from Milwaukee to East L. A. Lived in Long Beach for thirteen months (met my wife) then
headed back for Milwaukee, via the UP. It was
about a two day trip and a real blast.

Welcome to all UP fans. We are always trying to invite people to TrainBoard.com. Since we are still a new site it appears we have not invited enough UP fans yet. We will continue to seek them out.

Hang in there - we pick up more people every day http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

While I am a FRISCO and MKT fan I've always been a closet UP fanatic. Of the current railroads there is no doubt that the UP is the best there is. Uncle Pete runs a class act. Recently while in Kansas City trainwatching I saw a UP engineering department passenger special pass through Santa Fe Jct. and it was being pulled by the DD40. All cars were painted the same and were clean. A beautiful train! If that wouldn't make you a UP fan I don't know what would!

Alan;
I am both a UP fan and employee. I enjoy all facets of railroading and railroads. I previously worked on the Rock Island for four years. I now have 24 years on the UP.

I KNEW there were lots of UP fans (and employees, Bob) out there http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

Bob, your railroad will really be able to fly when the locomotives get those wings on the front http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

Out in the wide open spaces in Wyoming, you could hear them before you could see them. KRAL in Rawlins would announce the UP
crew calls several times an hour. The drag
freights (and the DJ would stretch out the word drag) would be pulled by a Big Blow, plus a couple of GPs behind, trailing what looked like everything Cheyenne Yard (or the
yard at Ogden) had. I missed seeing the earlier gas-turbines, as well as the double-
diesel locomotives from GE and Alco, but I'll always remember the Big Blows. http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

WOW!! No wonder you will not forget the big blows, what a pity they had to go http://www.trainboard.com/frown.gif

If one had been preserved for main line running, now THAT would be a crowd-puller! It would even have got me over there http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

p.s. what did they sound like? Jet aircraft?

No railroad in North America can equal the show put on by the UP between North Platte and Gibbon Jct. Nebraska. Just park your car near the tracks in any of the small towns along the route and see them roll by at the rate of over 5 per hour for 24 hours. It even impressed my wife and she's not easily impressed by trains. Besides that, what other major US railroad still bears its original name?

Alan

Johnny, I am primarily a BNSF fan, but the UP rates a close second http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif It is good to see a railroad stick with it's original diesel livery (with minor changes) instead of trying to be trendy and up-to-date. Grey and Armour yellow still looks great after all these years. I hope they never change it.

I havn't seen your name before on the site, so welcome to Trainboard http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

I have had a hard time deciding which railroad I like the best.... Finally settled on the Union Pacific because there are so many different locomotives, it is the closest to my location, and its colors do not get merged into someone else just about the time I begin to get interested in modeling something. I also like the BN in Cascade Green and black, but for now it is in a minor role. I plan to build my layout around the Hinkle, OR to Nampa, ID section that runs through the Blue Mountains. Work is progressing, but not to the point where we can operate trains yet.

YESS!! when i got to this msg board, i was SOOO hoping that there'd be a UP board. this is sweet. i'll be coming here often!

i found this place by a link found on train page i was looking at.

i was so stoked when i found out that USA trains (model company, but i'm sure you already knew that http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif) was coming out with UP SD40-2 engines. i'm gonna get mine on order. i don't really remember what got me to start liking UP engines....they rock! http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

last week i was going back to work from my break and to get to work i gotta cross tracks. well, coming up to the gates i saw them coming down and so i sped up and whadayaknow! there were 3 UP engines pulling 2 other engines (don't remember the name) pulling i don't know...25-30 cars maybe? and best of all it was goin slow so it rocked. i was in awe staring at it while it was going by. it was sweet. needless to say i was a bit late to work, but i don't care. that pretty much made my day.
i would LOVE to work at UP. wouldn't know....well...i DON'T know where to start actually. http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

now i'm just babbling.
bye
