View Full Version : CN Paint Schemes

I just bought a new videotape - Trains on Location - Best of the West.
When I was in Canada in 1985, most of the locomotives (except switchers) had the black and grey diagonal stripe scheme. On the tape there are still lots like this, but, of course lots in the new scheme, without the stripes.
Which do you prefer? I have to say that I thought at the time that the stripe scheme was one of the best around, very distinctive! I still think it looks great.

I personally like the red cab and black body with the logo of North America on the loco. I use to like the strips, but after seeing that sleek look...that did it for me.

I personally hate all CNR paint schemes, and which they would change to soemthing nice for once. There image, even today is dark, and almost spooky if you see one of there trains at night.
I hate the ZEBRA stripes as they wether bad, I hate the noodle becuase it is plane, I hate the NA becuase when it starts to peel North America looks like Russia, I ahte the green and yellow becuase it was cheap, and I sorta like the gold/green one. At least they put effort and money into that one. The current one is OK, its an improvemnt by far to anything they ahve had since '72.
Happy Railroading!

Geez, I'd say your pretty firm on that thought.
I'm a real ZEBRA fan. Seeing two or three of these from a distance was a real work of art. It was VERY recognizable, the world over, and excellent for safety as well.
I'm sure it would still be the standard scheme today had not the kids in the boardroom figured folks in the US had to have the corporate logo in their face.
They were probably the same fella's who came up with the CP "flag" scheme.
Cheers

Dane, Dane, Dane! Surely things are not that bad? But I get the faintest feeling that you do not like CN very much http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif
I will go with Dave, those stripes look very sharp, and are instantly recognisable. Unlike any other paint scheme. http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

I am personally fond of the North American paint scheme, with the zebra scheme a close second.

The stripes on the CN units wether really bad. On soem of the SD40s, they wore down so bad that you could see the wet noodle.
I don't not-like CN, I just hate their dark image. There web site is spooky.

HI there,
I like most of the CN schemes but I also liked the original Worm on black background on GP units and the original F unit ones. My page is http://members.xoom.com/xdfoprd/modelrr.html for my layout.
Dave Winter, I was reading your sons layout description in a Great MOdel Rails mag and remember elements of yours from past reading... pleased to see you on the net! My email is xdford@start.com.au should you care to write... and that goes for anybody!
Cheers

I too am a ZEBRA fan http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif It sure is distinctive and there is no doubt that it is CN.

Yes I know you have seen this picture elsewhere but don't those zebra stripes really show up?
Like Dane though. The green and gold was really sharp but should we go back in time? Weathering shows up on all colour schemes but that is the reality of railroading.

From a CN family, and patient father of Dane...lol.... I think it is time CN updated their engines looks. CP has finally got its act together after years of a boring paint scheme. I never really like PAC man, I liked grey and maroon, but it is dated by today's standards. I love the "golden rodent" loco on red; it looks real sharp. I find CN looking, well, a bit drap myself.
The engines do look good new, but they don't age so well.

Well it would cost too much money to repaint the older units with the stripes . I like the new CN logo on the newer units . It's simple , I always thought the stripes were cool myself . As long as the units are in good running condition , what they look like does not matter http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

Actually I wish CN would have painted the newer units with the stripes . I think they look good on locomotives .

In my opinion, the stripes looked good on both hood units and full cowl units. I bet they would look great on the new big stuff smile.gif

My favorite CN scheme has to be the one applied to the 1000 series GMD1's the red cab and shorthood, black long hood with the CN noodle.
