Well sience there is no BN Board I though I would ask this here. Does anyone know if any of BN's early SD40-2s are still out there running on BNSF or when they were retierd by BN.

Kevin,
I have seen some "Pumpkin SD40-2's" that don't have the "Santa Fe" look to them (Air Conditioner, Antenna Plates, Rotory Beacon Mounts) so they must be EX-BN or EX-Frisco units. I'll check my latest pics when they get back from the Lab. I'm having them digitalized so I can post them here. Might have an EX-BN/FRISCO SD40-2 "Pumpkin" in the mix. I remember seeing a Santa Fe "Yellowbonnet" SD40-2 that looked BRAND NEW on the point of a mixed freight at Edelstein, IL. It was getting help from two slightly dirty "Pale Face" BN GP50's! Blew my mind! http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

Kevin,

Yes there have been a number of BN SD40-2's stricken from the roster. A number of the 6700's went to the Illinois Central in the 90's. All these units had the dynamic brakes removed by IC, and many ran around with Cascade green with a primer painted roof patch for some time. These are now the IC 6100 series. Even many of the later SD40-2's have been LUGO'ed lately, (see the northtown subject in this forum) and some have shown up in the EMD and HLCK lease fleets.

we had an ex bnsf sd40-2 early last night out of chicago. it is now under the cefx lease company. bnsf was removedfrom nose and long hood and cefx was painted on the cab side along with number. cefx was also above the number lights on cab. there are still early ones out there in paint on the bn roster. in both bn and heritage 1 scheme. cefx 7105 is the one we had.

If it doesn't have anticlimbers it's a real early one- And from what i've seen there still are quite a few racking up the miles still.

We see lots of early 40-2's here in Corwith Chicago. Most in BN and ATSF, but more "pumpkins" as time goes on. They are used on the stack trains west to LA, Oakland, etc. The roundhouse usually puts the -9's on the point, so the crews don't "complain". There's been a couple of "B" 40-2's crawling through also. They show up about every 3 - 4 days on eastbound trips

Are those SD40-2Bs all in Pumpkin paint or is it just 7501?

I noticed the one in Pumpkin orange is labeled an SD42B. Does anyone recall offhand if that's new BNSF parlance or if BN used that designation also? I knew that's what BNSF referred to them as but i can't remember the BN designation and don't feel like looking... http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

BNSF 40-2 "B's": Looked in the system special instructions for the "b" designation. Nothing except SD40-2. The ones we've seen are 7501, 7506, 7510. They all appear "homebuilt" and no two are the same as far as sheet metal and fixtures goes.

Well, you sorta answered the question...

The 7506 is ex Santa Fe. The other two are BN green. Roundhouse foreman says they are wreck rebuilds and they are referred to as SD40-2's.

One of the original rebuilds was SD40 7600. This unit went on to work the Soo Line in red and white as their 6450.
This would be an interesting unit to model due to the dynamics being moved to the front of the unit.

Gary.

7502 has the dynamic brakes where the cab would have been as well; no battery boxes.

7501 has full battery boxes minus the cab.

7500 has no battery boxes.

None had Q fans while 7500 has an exhaust silencer...

Units 7506, 7510 were ex SD45-2s...

I think I found the answer to your question. it's here at http://www.trainpix.com/BN/EMDORIG/SD40-2/INDEX.HTM

but it turns pretty slow. There are many early SD40-2s still around. I hear there are 2 unpatched BN SD40-2s still floating around. The 6908, from 4/1973, and the 7825, from 11/1974.

Are those early enough?

Wow, old topic, I do not even remember it. Anyways I see the older SD40-2 around the Northwest every day. Many of the newer BN SD40-2-s were sold to FURX but the older ones still chug-a-long for BNSF.

I don't know if it's a re-number or an original, but #6385 was in South Seattle Intermodal 2 days ago, in "Cascade Green" no less!

Again, http://www.trainpix.com/BN/EMDORIG/SD40-2/INDEX.HTM Some BN SD40-2s were assigned new numbers by BNSF, but most weren't. BNSF 6385 is BN 6385. A couple shots (not mine): http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/bnsf/bnsf6385atl.jpg http://railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=172549

If they still have there numbers on the back of the long hood that is the old BN number, the BN SD40-2's that were renumbered by BNSF should have there numbers on the side of the cab and there old numbers on the long hood should be covered over.
